4to. pp. (4), 46, (2). Contemporary marbled wrappers. Stamp of a French Franciscan library (?).

First edition of an elaborate production to celebrate the entry of Princess Louise-Marie into the Carmelite convent of St Denis. The present copy is the luxury quarto edition; a duodecimo edition was also published in the same year.

As a daughter of the philandering Louis XV, Louise was drawn to religion at an early age. Her father however, intended her for a political marriage; it was only after refusing or being rejected for any such match that she was finally allowed to enter the Carmelite convent of St Denis in Paris in 1770, at the age of 33. She was elected prioress three times before her death in 1787.
