The Associated PressLions tackle Ndamukong Suh returns an interception 20 yards in Sunday's NFL game between Detroit and St. Louis in Detroit. It was the former Grant High standout's first NFL interception and Detroit's first win this season.
Detroit's rookie defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has made big plays all season for the struggling Lions. On Sunday, he finally made one that contributed to a victory.
The 6-foot-4, 307-pounder out of Portland's Grant High School and Nebraska made his first NFL interception in the fourth quarter of Detroit's 44-6 win over the St. Louis Rams at Ford Field.
The play occurred in the fourth quarter when Rams rookie quarterback Sam Bradford dropped back to pass from his team's 49-yard line. Suh, playing left defensive tackle, was successfully stonewalled during his pass rush and stood at the 48 when Bradford's pass zipped his way.
Suh reached up his right hand, tipped the ball about 20 feet in the air and caught it at the 49.
His reaction: "Look down field and find some way to get down to the end zone, make a play," he told reporters.
Suh certainly tried. But he won't be mistaken for legendary Detroit running back Barry Sanders anytime soon.
After taking off to the right, he put a move on Rams tight end Daniel Fells at the 48 and ran through his diving tackle attempt. Suh continued swerving downfield before cutting back inside on Bradford at the 40, and then juking past two offensive linemen until he was back in the middle of the field.
With the fans shouting "Suuuuuuuuh," he obviously began to run out of gas before taking on Rams running back Steven Jackson head on at the 31. Jackson, a former Oregon State standout, went low enough to cut Suh's legs out from under him. Suh was given credit for a 20-yard return.
"It was just reaction," Suh said of his ability to tip the pass, catch it and run. "And thank God; thank my mom and my dad for blessing me with that talent, and I'm just happy to make a play. I should have followed my blockers."
Suh, the second overall selection in this year's NFL Draft, had three sacks in his team's first four games, all defeats. Suh was glad that dubious run came to an end.
"It's a good feeling; it definitely feels good," Suh said. "Whatever it may be is over with, and we can really focus on and check out the good things that we did and the things we need to work on and still getting the win. Definitely a good feeling to have this win under the belt and continue to go and get more."
