The U.S. Senate on Thursday confirmed President Barack Obama’s nomination of former Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller to serve as U.S. marshal for the District of Kansas, a spokeswoman for Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., confirmed Friday.
Roberts’ spokeswoman, Sarah Little, provided Friday afternoon a notice verifying that Miller had been confirmed by unanimous consent to serve as U.S. marshal for a four-year term. The confirmation also appeared on the U.S. Senate website.
Miller was nominated for the post one year ago, but the U.S. Senate returned his nomination to Obama on Dec. 17, according to the Library of Congress website. The move occurred under a Senate rules clause that says nominations that are pending when the Senate adjourns or recesses for more than 30 days must be returned to the president unless the Senate waives the rule by unanimous consent.
Obama resubmitted Miller’s nomination Jan. 7. According to the Library of Congress website, it was approved by voice vote Thursday in the Senate.
Miller will replace acting U.S. Marshal Craig Beam, who has served in an interim capacity since the retirement of Walter Bradley in January 2014.
Miller didn’t return phone calls seeking comment.
Miller held the position of Topeka police chief from September 2006 until July 31, 2014. He previously served for 34 years with the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department, where he was chief for six years.
The U.S. Marshals Service District of Kansas is headquartered in Kansas City, Kan., and maintains offices in the federal courthouses in Topeka and Wichita.
