Countdown To A New Brown | Rockwell Station
The Rockwell station, as well as the Kedzie station, reopened for customer service on Wednesday, August 16, 2006, two days earlier than originally planned.
Customers at Rockwell and Kedzie will find new glass station houses, new longer platforms to accommodate eight-car trains when the project is completed, new benches and brighter lighting.
Among the most notable features are the stations’ accessible features including a ramp, tactile edging and wheel chair turnstiles. With the opening of Rockwell and Kedzie, the number of accessible rail stations on our system increased. Currently, more than half of our 144 stations are accessible. As the Brown Line Capacity Expansion project progresses the other stations on the line also will become accessible.
These were the first two stations to re-open as part of the $530 million Brown Line Capacity Expansion project designed to relieve congestion, provide for future growth by increasing capacity and improve service delivery, customer comfort and safety. Overall, the expansion project includes the rehabilitation of 18 Brown Line stations and upgrading or replacing traction power, signal and communication equipment.
