Matrix 19321-2(?)* Ten Black Berries New Desor DE3001g, f or h
It is not clear which take this is. The stamp at the 5 o'clock position, partly covered by the label, reads 19321-2 or 19321-12. Take 2 was regarded for years as being unissued, but O.Wilson, writing on page 6 of DEMS Bulletin 1980-4 says Rust's discography shows it was on Cameo 0194-B. Aaslund's 1954 Wax Works of Duke Ellington says the Banner is both takes 1 and 3 with both the Cameo and the Oreole being take 1. New Desor shows both takes 1 and 3 for Banner, indicating the authors have listened to both and compared them. Willie Timner's Ellingtonia The Recorded Music of Duke Ellington and His Sidemen,(4th edition), says the same. Dick Bakker's Duke Ellington on Microgroove - Volume One 1923-1936 shows both takes 1 and 3 for Banner 0594-B, but Jorgen Grunnett Jepsen's discogrpahy of Duke Ellington Vol.1 Period 1925-1937 says take 2 is unissued and that the Banner, Oriole and Romeo pressings are just 1. Suffice it to say I'm leaving this as unresolved unless someone will provide me with copies of labels and runoffs that show takes 1 and 3.

(courtesy of Michel Essevaz-Roulet) Help! I'm stuck in a time warp and can't get out...
I just can't get this jaunty little tune out of my head. It was only recorded the once as far as I can tell, unless someone else cut it. It moves with a real swagger and apart from a weak ending, seems to me, to be a perfect little tune for a Cotton Club Review. Why should it make just this one appearance and then disappear from view? I find myself constantly humming or singing it, wordless I know, this has been going on for over a month now and, unlike other tunes, its appeal is not diminishing.
-Marcus Girvan in Duke-LYM, Oct 2007)
I am really amused to read about the effect Shout 'Em Aunt Tillie has on Marcus.
It got to me when I first heard it and the impact has lasted for a long time. I used to tum-tum tumpty it all
the time. That was in the late 1960's when my son and nephew were aged three and four. I played
the track often and after hearing it for the first time, they stripped off their clothes and
marched around the room to the music, naked with their underpants on their heads. At the end
of the music, they used to collapse into giggling and demand that I play it again... and again.
I happily obliged. Their craze lasted for months. They invented words to the tune.
Every so often since, if I hear it, it gets me going again, but the other two (now in their forties)
are more restrained, thank goodness. I have played with setting my own lyric to it. I find it
rewarding to sing to, trumpet-like. There are Duke-LYM correspondents far more adept than I at analysing its power; to me, it lies in the impact of repetition and the (to my ears) Armstrong-like melody. The descending introduction to Ray Charles' Hit The Road, Jack (which I also still find catchy) fits nicely as an intro and turn-around for Shout 'Em Aunt Tilly. With regards and thanks for reawakening my interest (I shall replay my old LP again now).

After recording on June 12,1930 as Mills Ten Blackberries, the Ellington orchestra embarked on a tour of the eastern states, appearing in Baltimore, Mahanoy City, Lancaster, Philadelphia, Waltham, Old Orchard Beach, Buzzards Bay, Bournehurst, Boston, Pittsburgh.
In July, they travelled by train to Hollywood to record the sound for the Amos 'n' Andy film Check and Double Check. They performed in the midwest during this trip, details of which will be revealed by Ken Steiner in his presentation to the Duke Ellington Study Group in Woking, England, in May 2012.
