49er

A 49er was a member of a group that traveled to California in 1849 during that year's gold rush.

A self-proclaimed 49er, who had become a beggar in San Francisco who was encountered by Data in 1893, claimed to require large amounts of whiskey as a liniment because he fell down in a shaft and got blown up in a tunnel. He considered the street Hotel Brian was on his street, directing other perceived beggars to go elsewhere. (TNG: "Time's Arrow")
