Bellerophon class

The Bellerophon class was a class of Federation starship operated by Starfleet during the 23rd century. (SNW: "A Quality of Mercy")

History[]

The Bellerophon class was in service with Starfleet as early as 2243. (SNW: "A Quality of Mercy")

Ships of the line saw normal fleet deployments during this time that took them to Starbase 1, as well as assisting with the setup and configuration, and then later forced scuttling of Bavali Station near Gorn space. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds", "The Broken Circle", "Lost in Translation")

In an alternate timeline resulting from a time travelling Christopher Pike, the USS Farragut had assisted the USS Enterprise with tracking down a Romulan intruder that had crossed into Federation Space from the Neutral zone. During this encounter, the Farragut was targeted by the intruder, and seriously damaged after being struck with a Plasma torpedo. (SNW: "A Quality of Mercy")

Bridge of a Bellerophon class starship

The Bellerophon class is an overall small, compact design consisting of a saucer section similar in size and configuration of the Constitution-class, without a separate engineering section. The main deflector was housed in a small area on the underside of the saucer, and the curved nacelle pylons were mounted directly on the ventral surface, which pulled the nacelles in underneath in a tucked in configuration.

This class had a crew complement of approximately four hundred.

Ships of the class were equipped with phaser turrets typical of the period, and deflector shields, in addition to having a maximum speed of warp 9. (TOS: "Obsession", SNW: "A Quality of Mercy")

Background information[]

In July 2022, concurrent with the visual debut of the USS Farragut in "A Quality of Mercy", Star Trek: Strange New Worlds art director Tim Peel tweeted that he believed the class of the ship to be Bellerophon, based on information he had received from other members of the production crew. [1] This name was eventually substantiated in January 2025 by Fanhome's third issue outing (p. 3) of their Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection partwork publication. Closeup and clearly readable images of Farragut's two bridge dedication plaques were published by Fanhome in the accompanying magazine (p. 14) that came with the aforementioned partwork.

It was on one of the plaques that the following additional class information was stated:

  • Length: 316 meters
  • Beam: 201 meters
  • Height: 69 meters
  • Tonnage: 150,000 tonnes
  • Tactical weaponry: Phaser arrays fore/Aft photon torpedo
  • Rescue: Tractor beams

Apocrypha[]

Before Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in 2022, the designation Bellerophon class was used in 2011 by Star Trek Online for a 25th century spin-off/successor class to the Intrepid-class.
