Tinnitus
Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, was a medical condition in which people heard sound without a connected source, usually heard, but not always, as a ringing sound.
In 2259, the crew of the USS Enterprise experienced this while on and around Rigel VII. Though both Doctor Joseph M'Benga and Nurse Christine Chapel initially believed that this was the case, in actuality, it was the first symptom of the radiation that permeated the planet, which ultimately caused amnesia among those infected.
