The model of the Alka-Celsior
This studio model was one of the concept models designed by Nilo Rodis and built at ILM by model builders Bill George and Steve Gawley for the USS Excelsior for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
For further information on this studio model, see Excelsior-class study models.
The name was an in-joke reference to the Alka-Seltzer brand-name of indigestion medicine, and a play on the name "Excelsior".
During the early 1960s, Richard C. Datin, Jr. built models for some of Alka-Seltzer's television commercials; Datin went on to become the very first Star Trek studio model maker in 1964. (The Enterprise NCC 1701 and The Model Maker, pp. 21-22)
In August 2024, the model was put up for auction in the Entertainment Memorabiliia Live Auction: Los Angeles Summer 2024 by Propstore Auction. [1]
