הִגִּיעַ • (higía) (hif'il construction)

1. to arrive, to get, to reach

   הִגַּעְתֶּם לְשָׁם? ― higatém l'shám? ― Have you gotten there?

   • Passover Haggadah:

     […] עַד שֶׁבָּאוּ תַלְמִידֵיהֶם וְאָמְרוּ לָהֶם: ״רַבּוֹתֵינוּ, הִגִּיעַ זְמַן קְרִיאַת שְׁמַע שֶׁל שַׁחֲרִית!״

     […] 'ad shebá'u talmideihém v'am'rú lahém: "rabotéinu, higía' z'mán k'ri'át sh'má' shel shakharít!"

2. to be deserved, to serve someone right

   אני לא חושב שזה מגיע לי. ― aní lo khoshév she-zé magía li ― I don't think I deserve this.

   מה עשיתי שזה מגיע לי? ― ma asíti she-zé magía li? ― What did I do to (lit. that I) deserve this?

• Hebrew הִגִּיעַ is typically used with לְ־ (l'-, “to”) or ־ָה (-a, “-ward”, dative case), similar to הָלַךְ (halákh, “to walk, to go”): “הלך/הגיע למדינה”, ‎ “הלך/הגיע לבית” (or “הלך/הגיע הביתה”). This contrasts with English arrive or be: “be/arrive in a country”, “be/arrive at home” (or “be/arrive home”).
