From Proto-Southwestern Tai *fuːŋᴬ¹ (“flock; swarm; group; party”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨺᩪᨦ, Lao ຝູງ (fūng), Lü ᦚᦳᧂ (ḟung), Shan ၽုင် (phǔng) or ၾုင် (fǔng), Ahom 𑜇𑜤𑜂𑜫 (phuṅ).

- Rarely used of inanimate things.
