From Middle High German briutegome, from Proto-West Germanic *brūdigomō. The form yielded older Luxembourgish *Bräidigem, (contracted) *Bräitchem. Compare obsolete Bräitchen m (“bridegroom”). Folk etymology then reformed or enhanced this as Braut (“bride”) +‎ -chen (diminutive suffix) +‎ Mann (“man”).
