From Proto-Finnic *imeh (compare Estonian ime, Votic ime, Karelian imeh) through metathesis, from earlier *imeš (whence also Proto-Samic *ëmës > Northern Sami amas), derived (through a regular change *je > *i initially) from Proto-Uralic *jemä (compare Northern Khanty [script needed] (jim), [script needed] (jem), whence [script needed] (jimǝŋ, “holy, sacred”)).[1][2]
