kausi

  1. genitive singular of kauss

From Proto-Finnic *kauci, from Proto-Finno-Permic *kawte (road? way? passage (of a journey)?). Related to Proto-Samic *kuovtë (central?) (Northern Sami guovda). The word may have originally referred to a section of a riverbed, in which case it could be a Pre-Germanic borrowing, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰewd-.[1] The modern meaning is a re-extraction from compounds such as kuukausi and vuorokausi.
