From Proto-Finnic *leülü, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *lewle (“spirit, soul”).[1] Cognate with Estonian leil, Komi-Permyak лов (lov), Udmurt лул (lul), Northern Sami lievla and Hungarian lélek (“soul, ghost”).[2]
