From Proto-Finnic *parvi, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *parwɜ or *parɜ-wɜ. Cognates include Estonian parv (flock, group), Ingrian parvi (flock, group), Veps parveh (flock), Northern Khanty пөр (pør, flock, group) and possibly Erzya пурнамс (purnams, to collect, compile, gather).
