From Wiktionary, the free dictionary
From Proto-Finnic *riittädäk. Related to Ingrian riittää and Karelian riitteä. The original meaning was "to cover with (thin) ice" (whence riite), from which "to cover" and abstractly "to suffice". If from earlier *riip-tä- (with *-tä-), the root could be a borrowing from Proto-Germanic *hrīmô (genitive *hrīpaz).[1]
