Bitan Aharon Reserve, שמורת טבע ביתן אהרון
and kurkar ridge

January 23, 2023

The Bitan Aharon Reserve covers part of the second (middle) Kurkar ridge that runs on a north–south axis in this part of the Israeli coastal plain, and it includes a number of ancient rock-hewn tombs and burial caves.
The Reserve features batha vegetation including hairy bread-grass (Hyparrhenia hirta), headed thyme (Coridothymus capitatus), African fleabane (Phagnalon rupestre), cat-thyme germander (Teucrium capitatum). Numerous species of geophytes like small-flowered pancratium (Pancratium parviflorum), Persian cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum), hyacinth squill (Scilla hyacinthoides) and common asphodel (Asphodelus ramosus). A single Mt.Tabor oak grows on the hill, a carob tree and a few lentisk shrubs. In the eastern part of the reserve are ancient burial caves.
