Gabrielle Kinney (Earth-616)

Origin[]

Gabrielle is one of ten clones of Wolverine,^[13][15] youngest of the Sisters, created by Alchemax Genetics, a division of Alchemax. The project was overseen by Robert Chandler, with security provided by Captain Mooney. The girls were created and trained to serve as bodyguards for humanitarian missions and other personnel.^[6] Much like Laura before them, they were often abused by their handlers, particularly Mooney,^[16] but the elder Sisters did their best to protect her from the worst of the abuse. She was incapable of feeling pain, the result of nanites implanted in her body that were slowly killing her. With six of her sisters dead due to fatalities on missions, or as a result of the nanites, she escaped along with Zelda, Bellona, and X23 3PAR.^[13] They were assisted in their escape by Kimura, who armed and equipped them before sending them after Alchemax for revenge for stealing property from the Facility.^[14]

Revenge on Alchemax Genetics[]

With the arms supplied by Kimura, the Sisters launched a campaign against Alchemax, targeting their personnel for assassination. Gabby, however, quickly grew disillusioned with her sisters' more extreme measures. So when 3PAR headed to Paris to assassinate Chandler's son, she sent an anonymous note to Wolverine tipping her off.^[6] Laura successfully foiled the assassination attempt, however 3PAR committed suicide rather than be captured.^[17]

Gabby sought Laura out directly in the aftermath and confronted her about 3PAR's death, as well as admitted that she was the one who sent the note. She then fled Laura's apartment after setting a fire as a distraction, and returned to the sewers where the rest of the girls were hiding. Laura followed her, and against Gabby's objections Bellona shot her four times in the chest to incapacitate her; however, Laura herself was unknowingly being followed by Captain Mooney, and the Sisters freed her to help them deal with the Alchemax soldiers swarming their hideout, before Taskmaster arrived and shot the three fugitive clones.^[6]

They survived because of their body armor and with Laura's aid escaped into the streets of New York. She took them to the Sanctum Sanctorum to seek the help of Doctor Strange with what was killing the girls.^[16] After a misadventure with a monster Bellona inadvertently set loose from a cupboard of horrors, Strange teleported the group to New York Hospital, where he successfully located the nanites which were killing Zelda. Unable to operate on them himself, he sent the girls on to Pym's laboratory to borrow an Ant-Man Suit, so Laura could enter Zelda's body to fight the nanites directly.^[13] They were interrupted by Wasp; however, Jan was ultimately convinced to help them. She and Laura were successfully able to fight the devices off, but their attack tripped a warning beacon, alerting Mooney to the girls' location. He attacked them at the lab, and was able to fatally wound Zelda before Laura and Jan could restrain him.^[18]

Taking advantage of their prisoner, Laura hatched a plan to destroy Alchemax Genetics for good by allowing Mooney to escape and lead them to their secret bunker. She and Bellona switched outfits, and Laura allowed herself to be "killed" and brought into the base. Gabby and Bellona later entered the bunker with her assistance, and she then helped Bellona take out Captain Mooney. Bellona refused to allow Gabby to watch her kill him, and after the deed was done said her farewells. Gabby protested, but Bellona reminded her they had an agreement with Kimura. Gabby then hurried to meet up with Laura and came across her making a point to Chandler about the girls' powerlessness. As they were about to leave, Gabby asked to have a moment alone with Chandler, to which Laura agreed.

Gabby approached the director of the project which created her, and admitted that she really wanted to kill him; however, because Laura and Zelda wanted her to be a good person, and Gabby herself desired to be good, she refrained from doing so, and satisfied herself with scaring him instead by extending a claw — which Chandler didn't believe any of the girls had manifested — in his face. She then left him there and hurried to catch up with Laura, admitting she was afraid at the idea of having to decide her own future. Laura expressed her understanding, and her pride that Gabby held herself back from killing Chandler as they walked away from the base hand-in-hand before S.H.I.E.L.D. arrived.^[14]

Moving On[]

In the aftermath of the takedown of Alchemax Genetics, Gabby briefly stayed at Laura's apartment while it was decided what would become of her next. Driven by Logan's example, Laura preferred finding her a new home that offered her greater safety and a chance at the normal life both had been denied, and which Gabby was unlikely to find with her. However Gabby was upset by this prospect, as she felt that with Zelda and Bellona gone Laura was all the family she had left; however, Laura ultimately realized that Logan was wrong when he sent her away to the Xavier Institute, and reconsidered. She agreed that the best place for Gabby would be with her, asking her to stay on permanently. The new home also came with a new pet when Gabby gleefully adopted a wolverine named Jonathan that Squirrel Girl rescued from a lab.^[19]

Despite growing closer with her new sister, Gabby declined to tell Laura the full truth about herself. She was unable to hide it upon encountering an alternate future Logan: he revealed that he had known her in his home reality. Logan immediately demanded to know whether Gabby intended Laura harm. She denied his accusation, and Logan appeared to accept it. However, he later tried to warn Laura of Gabby's actions in his own future. She refused to even listen, pointing out that the two realities are not the same. Any further debate was ended when Captain America arrived in pursuit of Logan because the Inhuman Ulysses predicted that Logan would kill Gabby, and S.H.I.E.L.D. scrambled to intercept him before he could carry out the killing. However S.H.I.E.L.D.'s efforts to prevent Ulysses' vision ultimately led directly to its apparent fulfillment: After their attempts to restrain Logan only drove him into a blind rage, Gabby took it upon herself to reach out and attempt to calm him. Unfortunately, Logan mistook her for the Gabrielle of his reality and lashed out, impaling her on his claws.^[20]

Although pronounced dead on the scene by Rogers, Gabby in actuality survived her wounds because, unlike her other sisters, she did inherit Laura's healing factor. She rushed to intervene in the fight between Laura and Logan that ensued in the wake of her apparent death and managed to defuse the situation. Gabby revealed her powers to Laura and apologized for not telling her before. Laura broke off any possibility of a relationship with Logan, and Gabby warned him never to bother or upset her again, otherwise, she would "put him down" like a rabid dog. She subsequently joined Laura as she withdrew from the brewing Second Superhero Civil War.^[21]

Enemy of the State II[]

After seemingly killing the entire civilian population of Daylesville, California,^[22] Laura was arrested by S.H.I.E.L.D.; however, her behavior had been influenced by trigger scent released from a Madripoorian aircraft. After escaping custody, Laura and Gabby sought passage upon a pirate ship to reach Madripoor to search for answers. Unfortunately Captain Ash turned out to be part of an underground child trafficking ring, and although Gabby and Laura saved the children, it was not before being sold out to Kimura, who was responsible for having dropped the trigger in the first place.^[23] Laura was then captured by Roughouse and Bellona, who were working for Kimura.^[24]

Gabby was put in a shipping container with the children,^[25] but escaped with Jonathan and returned to Madripoor with Gambit, Angel, and Marvel Girl.^[26] Gabby later saved Bellona's life and convinced her to stop fighting for Kimura, who had heavily experimented on her. After Laura drowned Kimura in the ocean with her bare hands, Gabby reached the water as Bellona admitted she had actually murdered the Californians whom Laura was blamed for. Bellona was then arrested by S.H.I.E.L.D. after telling Laura to take care of Gabby.^[27]

Further Adventures with Laura[]

After returning to New York City, the pair began to track down those responsible for the child trafficking ring they'd encountered during their trip to Madripoor when an alien child crash-landed on Roosevelt Island, speaking Laura's name to Ironheart with her dying breath.^[28] The child had brought a deadly contagion which came to be known as the Laura Kinney Virus and forced the island into quarantine. Against Laura's wishes, Gabby smuggled herself onto Roosevelt Island and helped to thwart A.I.M.'s attempt to steal the alien's corpse.^[29] They were then joined by Logan, Daken, and Deadpool and the combined healing factors of the five helped to cure all the infected.^[30]

Sometime later, Gabby, now going by Honey Badger, was on a walk with Jonathan, when they stumbled upon the lab where Jonathan had been abused. She decided to call Deadpool, afraid that Laura wouldn't approve, and together they began trashing the place. When Laura realized Gabby still hadn't return from her walk, she tracked her down and found them battling zombie animals. After talking to Gabby and assuring her that she would have helped her is she asked, they set the building alight and watched it burn together.^[31]

After their time with Jean Grey's X-Men,^[32] Laura and Gabby, with the help of Hank McCoy, began to track down people who were involved in the cloning of Laura and subsequent projects. At the same time, Gabby became fixated on the idea of a birthday after learning that the Cuckoos celebrated one. For their birthday the remaining three Cuckoos had planned to bring their two sisters back from the dead. Because their psychic powers were incompatible with the cloned bodies they constructed, Esme transferred her consciousness to a kidnapped Gabby, hoping to use her healing factor. Meanwhile, Sophie, whose body's destruction had been accelerated by Esme, contacted Laura telepathically and offered her assistance.^[33]

When Mindee came to find Laura, Sophie persuaded her to their side, and they drove to the X-Mansion to face the others. In the midst of the fight between Laura and Esme, Mindee slipped into the mansion to use Cerebro, and together with Phoebe and Celeste, they trapped her in the psychic plane after being removed from Gabby. Later on, Gabby invited some X-Men friends to their apartment for a 'funeral party' for Esme, which included cake and party hats.^[34]

Age of X-Man[]

Gabby was one of Nate's prisoners at the Danger Room Prison Complex under the supervision of Warden Forge. She was with a fellow prisoner when Forge brought in former X-Man, Bishop,^[35] after he was arrested by Department X.^[36]

Gabby then pushed Bishop out of her way in the breakfast line as she told him she was still hungry, but was ignored by him as he thought he was in a conversation with someone else, which turned out to be no one. Gabby said that he was like Lorna, as they both knew the same invisible people. Gabby later played basketball with the other prisoners in the yard but was interrupted by Bishop who said that they both got off on the wrong foot and wondered if he had scared her or something. Gabby cut him off and said she could take him out. Bishop then asked her if they knew each other before she got the prison since he had flashes or memories of it.

She disagreed with him and told him she would remember someone as annoying as him, then reaffirmed that he was just like Lorna. Gabby said he should take a nap, as it helped her when she got the brain fuzzies, also she wouldn't tell Hank that he came around again. Later on, Bishop was attacked by Hank because Gabby had lied to Bishop about not telling on him.^[35]

Krakoa[]

Upon moving to Krakoa, Gabby finally met Logan and became closer to him and Akihiro. She usually opted to bond with them by playing violent games, such as Russian roulette with their claws, joining fights together,^[37] and playing a game called "Claws Out." She developed a habit of showing up to the Boneyard to see her older brother once he joined X-Factor; to her disappointment, he started flaking on her after he began dating his teammate Aurora.^[38]

Gabby later began training with other young mutants in an effort to synergise their powers, guided by the New Mutants. She particularly gravitated towards Warpath for mentorship.^[39][40] After learning that Madelyne Pryor was not entitled to Krakoan resurrection due to being a clone, Gabby began to wonder if she would be abandoned upon death as well.^[7]

She would eventually become concerned with the time her friends Martha Johansson, Rain Boy, Cosmar, and Anole were spending with the Shadow King (Amahl Farouk), but she couldn't tell Laura about it because she was on a mission in the Vault, and the other adults were of little help. Eventually she was forced to confront Farouk directly about these concerns, but the next day she was found dead.^[41] Worried The Five would not resurrect her, Martha possessed her so their friends could try to resurrect her by themselves using skills they learned from The Shadow King.^[42] Fortunately, The Five decided to follow their consciences and resurrect her. When she was reborn she said the last thing she remembered was seeing The Shadow King and Rahne Sinclair, feeling pain, and then nothingness.^[12]

Gabby, the Lost Club, Rahne, Warpath, Magik, Mirage, and Karma set out to get answers after it became apparent that the Shadow King had controlled Rahne into killing Gabby.^[43] Although eager to face the Shadow King, she railed against her mentors' unwillingness to differentiate the Shadow King and its unwilling host Farouk. Armed with their powers and trust in each other, the group managed to cut through the Shadow King's nightmarish illusions and destroy him, freeing Farouk and granting Gabby her revenge.^[44]

Gabby then joined her siblings to assist Omega Wolverine, a version of their father from a bleak future in which they and most others were killed after Moira MacTaggert enlisted Sentinels to annihilate Krakoa. Desperate to avoid this, Omega Wolverine staved off a Phalanx infection while they hunted down present-day Moira and was overtaken by it after successfully killing her. Their father arrived to face this rogue version of himself and put him down.^[45]

After reconciling with her brother, riddled from guilt at not being around when she needed him,^[40] Gabby planned a road trip in order to bond with the whole family. While in Nevada, they stumbled upon crazed mustelid taxidermists who were also obsessed with their family, as wolverines and honey badgers are mustelids. After escaping the trappers, the family enlisted Nature Girl to dismantle the rest of the operations and continued their trip.^[46]

After the fall of Krakoa and the forced exodus of mutantkind, Gabby was one of many who evaded being trapped in the White Hot Room outside of time and space. Those trapped re-emerged sometime later, having spent 15 years transforming their piece of Krakoa into a beautiful utopia. When the neo-Krakoans chose to return to the White Hot Room, Gabby watched sorrowfully with the others as their former home disappeared once again, peaceful and seemingly forever beyond their reach.^[47]

Although abused by Alchemax Genetics, Gabby was largely shielded from the worst of their treatment by her older sisters. As a result, she escaped with her innocence more or less intact. Doctor Strange observed with the Eye of Agamotto that she was indeed an innocent despite her early actions,^[13] and it is this enduring goodness that led her to reject her older sisters' vengeful bloodshed.^[6]

When she was first emancipated from Alchemax, Gabby was naïve and overly trusting; as she gained life experience with Laura and as a student of the New Mutants, she has become perceptive and very outspoken.^[39] Gabby is imaginative^[3] and appears to enjoy writing.^[11][40] She formed a group called the "Lost Club" with her close friends Cosmar, Cerebella, Rain Boy, and Anole; with this older, more aloof group she often ends up being the voice of reason.^[7]

Gabby desires familial connections and endeavors to be close to her genetic relations, who in turn have accepted her warmly. She holds little insecurity about her nature as a clone; Gabby greatly enjoys being with Laura and they are fiercely loyal to one another.^[21] Although she is at times annoyed with his overprotectiveness, Gabby is also close with her older brother Akihiro.^[40] Additionally, she enjoys spending time with her father Logan,^[48] who tries to give her father-daughter experiences.^[46][49] Due to her confidence and physical durability, she has no issue facing adults in combat and enjoys being rowdy with her father and siblings.^[50][37]

Gabrielle was cloned from the mutant Laura Kinney,^[13] therefore she possesses powers similar to her and their father Logan.^{[citation needed]} Gabrielle's accelerated cellular regeneration augments her natural strength, speed, agility, endurance, and reflexes.^{[citation needed]}

• Regeneration: Gabby’s body naturally regenerates most (if not all) damaged or destroyed tissue and organs at a rate which exceeds that of any baseline human. Although Alchemax believed otherwise, Gabrielle possesses this ability. Strangely, she still possesses her facial scarring.^[21] It is currently unclear whether her healing abilities provide the same secondary effects (enhanced strength, senses, endurance, etc.) as Laura's, or how it is affected by the nanites infesting her bloodstream.^{[citation needed]}
  • Decelerated Aging: Gabby inherited a lifespan similar to her father's.^[11]
• Retractable Claws: Gabby’s skeleton includes two retractable foot-long bone claws, one in each arm, that are housed beneath the skin and muscle of her forearms. Gabrielle could, at will, release these slightly curved claws through her skin between the knuckles on each hand. The bone claws are naturally sharp and tougher than normal human bone, allowing them to penetrate most flesh and many natural materials.^[14][29]
• Superhumanly Acute Senses: Gabby’s super-human senses are a combination of a separate mutant ability and her Healing Factor since her sense organs atrophy at a much slower rate than baseline humans. Her most improved senses are sight, hearing and smell.^[51]
• Insensitivity to Pain: As a result of Alchemax Genetics' experiments, Gabby is unable to feel pain.^[6]
