SCENE 1 Susan discovers three letter X's in a row on the doors to Big Bird's nest. Likewise, Oscar the Grouch has three X's on and around his trash can and David spots three more written on the sidewalk. Nobody can figure out who put them there or what they're for. Meanwhile down the street, an Anything Muppet in a cowboy hat places three X's on the window of the Fix-It Shop and laughs to himself with pride over his work.

While Bob takes a nap in the yard, the mysterious stranger happens in and makes his mark on Bob's forehead before going into hiding. David and Susan identify the three X's on Bob when the AM in a cowboy hat introduces himself as Three-In-A-Row Smith, the world's greatest tic-tac-toe player. He claims he was just practicing his marks and challenges Bob to a game, but Bob says he has to clean up his mess first.

Snuffy has heard of the games and wants to play a round, too.
