Chart Watch: Pitbull & Kesha & Eminem & RiRi

"Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha moves up to #1 on the Hot 100, displacing "The Monster" by Eminem featuring Rihanna. (Strikingly, all four artists go by a single name. Aspiring stars, take note.) This marks the first time that collaborations uniting a male solo artist and a female solo artist have appeared back-to-back at #1 since July 2010, when Eminem and Rihanna's previous pairing, "Love The Way You Lie," displaced "California Gurls" by Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg.

"Timber" is Pitbull's second #1 (following "Give Me Everything"). It's Ke$ha's third (following "TiK ToK" and "We R Who We R").

"Timber" enters The Official U.K. Singles Chart at #1, becoming the first transatlantic #1 hit of 2014. (There were six in 2013.) It's the second transatlantic #1 for both artists (following "Give Me Everything" and "We R Who We R").

The zesty arrangement and harmonica playing on "Timber" are reminiscent of another #1 hit on the Hot 100, Culture Club's 1984 smash "Karma Chameleon." The title echoes a #1 country hit from 1989, Patty Loveless' "Timber, I'm Falling In Love."

"Timber" tops the 2 million mark in U.S. digital sales this week.

OneRepublic's

"Counting Stars" jumps to #2, which matches the peak position of the group's biggest hit, "Apologize" (which was credited to Timbaland featuring OneRepublic). "Counting Stars" tops the 3 million mark in digital sales this week. It's the group's fourth song to reach this level. It follows "Apologize" (5,787,000), "Good Life" (3,309,000) and "Secrets" (3,070,000).

"The Monster" by Eminem featuring Rihanna drops to #3, ending a four-week run at #1. The song holds at #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for the 10th week. It's Rihanna's second song to log 10 or more weeks at #1 on this chart. "Diamonds" was on top for 14 weeks. Only one other female artist—Alicia Keys—has logged 10 or more weeks on top with two different songs: "Un-Thinkable (I'm Ready)" (12 weeks) and "No One" (10 weeks).

Lorde's "Royals" holds at #4. It's #1 on Hot Rock Songs for the 19th week.

Katy Perry

lands her 13th top 10 hit on the Hot 100 as "Dark Horse" (featuring Juicy J) jumps from #11 to #6. This is the second top 10 hit from "Prism" (following the #1 smash "Roar"). All three of Perry's studio albums have spawned two or more top 10 hits (as did the deluxe "The Complete Confection" edition of her sophomore album, "Teenage Dream").

This is the first top 10 hit for Juicy J, whose rose to fame as a member of Three 6 Mafia.

Avicii's "Wake Me Up" rebounds from #10 to #8. It holds at #1 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs for a record-extending 18th week.

Miley Cyrus's

"Wrecking Ball" rebounds from #12 to #9. The song tops the 3 million mark in digital sales this week, as does Cyrus' previous smash, "We Can't Stop." Both songs are from Cyrus' hit comeback album, "Bangerz." This marks the first time that Cyrus has reached the 3 million plateau with more than one song from an album or EP. Two earlier Cyrus songs have also topped 3 million. "Party In The U.S.A." is up to 5,395,000. "The Climb" is up to 3,709,000.

You may have noticed that two songs in this week's top 10 have the same titles as hit rock albums of recent vintage. Nickelback had a #2 album in 2008 with "Dark Horse." Bruce Springsteen had a #1 album in 2012 with "Wrecking Ball." I guess there are only so many good titles.

Digital sales rank: #2 (241K).

The Second Five: "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J jumps from #11 to #6 in its 16th week on the chart. It's her 13th top 10 hit; his first. Digital sales rank: #4 (229K)…Passenger's "Let Her Go" holds at #7 for the third week in its 23rd week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #6 (184K)… Avicii’s "Wake Me Up!" rebounds from #10 to #8 in its 28th week on the chart. This is its 20th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #10 (141K)…Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" rebounds from #12 to #9 in its 20th week on the chart. This is its 16th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #15 (112K)… Imagine Dragons' "Demons" drops from #6 to #10 its 37th week on the chart. This is its 11th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #11 (136K).

Two songs drop out of the top 10 this week (though both remain in the top 10 on Digital Songs). Katy Perry's "Roar" drops from #8. Digital sales rank: #9 (157K). One Direction's "Story Of My Life" drops from #9. Digital sales rank: #8 (158K).

Florida Georgia Line's

"Cruise" last week pulled ahead of Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" to become the best-selling country song in digital history. (As of this week, "Cruise" has sold 6,392,000.) "Need You Now" had held the country title since April 3, 2011, when it pulled ahead of Taylor Swift's "Love Story." ("Love Story" took the crown on Feb. 8, 2009 from Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats").

"Hold On, We're Going Home" by Drake featuring Majid Jordan tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. It's Drake's sixth song as a lead artist to reach this plateau.

Ellie Goulding's "Burn" tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. It's Goulding's third million-seller, following "Lights" (4,212,000) and "Anything Could Happen" (1,166,000).

"White Walls" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring ScHoolboy Q & Hollis tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. It's the fourth million-seller from the duo's million-selling album, "The Heist." Macklemore & Ryan Lewis logged 15 weeks at #1 on Hot Digital Songs in 2013. Only one other act has held the #1 spot that many or more weeks in a calendar year since the digital sales chart was introduced in 2004. That's The Black Eyed Peas, which had the best-selling song in the U.S. for a total of 20 weeks in 2009.

One Direction's "Best Song Ever," which debuted and peaked at #2 in August, tops the 1 million mark in digital sales. It's the boy band's fifth song to reach this level.
