Wilson suffered a broken toe and bruising, according to their website.

It said he was on a pedestrian crossing and jumped to avoid the car, but hit the windscreen and was "flipped over the top" of the vehicle.

"He would like all of you to know he's OK," the message read. Police said a "small car" was involved in the incident but there had been no arrests.

The band's spokesman said Wilson - known for his on-stage acrobatics - was knocked over but was "fine".

'Saved his life'

The group's website said: "He's the luckiest man alive, because he is still alive.

"It sounds daft, but a 'Ricky trademark jump' has probably saved his life.

"The jump meant he was flipped over the top of the car, hitting the windscreen, rather than getting trapped under it.

"He was crossing on a green pedestrian light."

He will be fit enough to perform at the band's next live shows in Holland and Germany at the start of June.

Hit-and-run

They are due to play at the T in the Park festival in Scotland in July and the Reading and Leeds festivals in August.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police confirmed that the hit-and-run happened at about 2200 BST on Sunday in Clarendon Road, Hyde Park, Leeds.

Wilson was taken to Leeds General Infirmary but released a short time later, she said.

"There's not a lot of detail other than he was hit by a small car - that's the only description anybody's been able to give," she added.

The five-strong band were one of last year's most successful acts.

They picked up three Brit Awards, winning best British group, best British rock act and best British live act.

Their debut album Employment has sold more than 1.5 million copies in the UK and they scored top 10 hits with I Predict A Riot, Everyday I Love You Less And Less and Oh My God.
