BBC SPORT | Football | Premiership | Tottenham 3-1 Portsmouth

Egyptian striker Mido marked his debut with two goals to sink Portsmouth and end Tottenham's run of five matches without a Premiership victory.

Diomansy Kamara headed Portsmouth into a first-half lead before Mido levelled with a powerful header from Simon Davies' inviting cross.

The loan signing from AS Roma stabbed Spurs in front from close range after Jermain Defoe had set him up.

Substitute Robbie Keane sealed it with a delicate lob from Andy Reid's pass.

Spurs gave Mido his first start after being an unused substitute at Bolton and the Egyptian striker had the game's first shot, firing over after neat set-up play by Timothee Atouba and Simon Davies.

Andy Reid was given his debut following his move from Nottingham Forest and his first involvement was to drive in a corner which fell invitingly for Ledley King, who stabbed a first-time shot wide.

Diomansy Kamara headed Pompey in front

Portsmouth were very much on the back foot from the start, and Mido was a whisker away from making contact as he swung at Atouba's cross.

But from out of the blue on 27 minutes, Portsmouth went ahead with their first effort on goal.

Spurs' marking was sloppy at Pompey's first corner and Diomansy Kamara slipped Mido to glance in Patrik Berger's kick from six yards.

Mido almost brought an instant response with a sharp turn and shot which Dejan Stefanovic deflected wide, and Spurs were then denied a penalty as Stefanovic got away with a tug on Jermain Defoe's shirt as he threatened to burst clear.

Spurs deservedly drew level on 34 minutes as Davies' cross was tailor-made for Mido to escape Linvoy Primus and power in a header from seven yards.

Kamara thought he had restored Pompey's lead on 43 minutes when he burst on to Stefanovic's through ball and rounded keeper Paul Robinson, but referee Steve Dunn ruled the Senegal midfielder had controlled the ball with his arm.

Mido was in action again at the start of the second half, with a brave header which went wide and earned him a nasty bang on the head for his pains.

Portsmouth keeper Kostas Chalkias

Chalkias looked uncomfortable as Spurs rained the crosses in

Spurs were hitting the by-line regularly to ping in some dangerous crosses and Pompey keeper Kostas Chalkias was relieved as he flapped at Stephen Kelly's cross and it dropped favourably for Primus to clear.

Portsmouth were under the cosh and Spurs took the lead on the hour with Mido's second goal.

The Portsmouth defence was in a mess as Arjan De Zeeuw's panicked clearance struck Stefanovic and Defoe snapped up the ball to face the ball across goal for Mido to tap in.

As Pompey sought an equaliser Yakubu turned sharply on to de Zeeuw's knock-down but he failed to get enough beef into his shot to seriously extend Robinson.

Reid almost marked his Spurs career with a goal as his shot struck the foot of Chalkias' right-hand post.

But Reid provided the point-clinching goal by playing a pass in the inside-left channel for Republic of Ireland team-mate Keane to delicately lift the ball over the stranded Chalkias.

  • Spurs boss Martin Jol on Mido's debut:
"Mido was injured and we gave him a late test. I thought he could play for 45 minutes, but he scored twice and you couldn't ask for more.

"Andy Reid also did well on his debut, and you worry a bit how new players will cope with the Premiership.

"This was a big win for us. We haven't had a bad spell recently, I think we have just been short of luck."

  • Pompey coach Joe Jordan on a disappointing defeat:
"We came here in good spirits with two good performances behind us, but I'm a bit disappointed.

"We thought we could get something but we didn't do enough to get a victory, and if we'd sneaked a draw it would have been rough on Spurs.

"We've got pace in the team, but we didn't use it. We were laboured and allowed Spurs to get behind the ball."
