Interstates play a crucial part in the overall road system in Oklahoma. If it were not for the interstates, Oklahoma would not play as crucial a part in the transportation of goods as it does today. Oklahoma has 935 miles of interstates within its borders. Interstate 35 runs north-south along the midsection of the state, connecting Thackerville, Ardmore, Pauls Valley, Purcell, Norman, Moore, Oklahoma City, Guthrie, Perry, and Blackwell. Overall, the highway goes from Laredo, Texas, near the U.S.-Mexico border, to Duluth, Minnesota. Interstate 40 runs east-west across the middle of the state, connecting Erick, Sayre, Elk City, Clinton, Weatherford, El Reno, Oklahoma City, Midwest City, Shawnee, Henryetta, and Sallisaw. The interstate has 331 miles in the Sooner State, and is a major east-west corridor from Interstate 15 in Barstow, California, to Wilmington, North Carolina. Interstate 44 is signed east-west throughout its 328 miles in Oklahoma, but runs north-south for its first 123 miles. Except for its first five miles and sections in Lawton, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa, the interstate is tolled for its entire length in Oklahoma. It costs $4 to drive the H.E. Bailey Turnpike ($1.25 from U.S. 70 to OK 36, and $2.75 from U.S. 62/U.S. 277/U.S. 281 north of Lawton to U.S. 62/U.S. 277 in Newcastle), $3.50 to drive the Turner Turnpike between Interstate 35 in northeast Oklahoma City and OK 66 in southeast Tulsa, and $3.50 to drive the Will Rogers Turnpike between U.S. 412 in east Tulsa and the Missouri State Line, for a grand total of $11 to drive all of Interstate 44 in Oklahoma. The Sooner State isn't nicknamed "Tollkahoma" for nothing! There are also three 3-digit interstates in Oklahoma and one hidden interstate. Interstate 235, the newest interstate in Oklahoma, was commissioned in 1989 and connects Interstate 35 and Interstate 40 in downtown Oklahoma City to Interstate 44 north of downtown, a distance of five miles. Interstate 240 connects Interstate 44 near Will Rogers World Airport in southwest Oklahoma City to Interstate 40 in far southeast Oklahoma City. Interstate 244 connects to Interstate 44 at both ends and provides access to downtown Tulsa. Finally, hidden Interstate 444 connects to Interstate 244 at both ends and makes up the Inner Dispersal Loop in downtown Tulsa. The links in the table below lead to the first page for each interstate. The three 2-digit interstates (35, 40, 44) have several pages each. All four 3-digit interstates have just one page each.
