EOS-PM 1 (Aqua) [NASA]
The focus for the Aqua (formerly EOS PM) satellite is the multidisciplinary study of the Earth's interrelated processes (atmosphere, oceans, and land-surface) and their relationship to Earth system changes.
The Aqua spacecraft features following instruments:
- AMSR/E - Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-EOS
- MODIS -Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer
- AMSU -Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit
- AIRS - Atmospheric Infrared Sounder
- HSB - Humidity Sounder for Brazil
- CERES - Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System
Originally it was planned to build three satellites to be launched in five year intervals, but only the first one was implemented.
The AMSR/E instrument stopped operating in October 2011 after over nine years despite a design life of three years.
