He was the son of Ferdinand II August Prinz von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld and Maria da Glória de Bragança, Rainha de Portugal.1,3 He married Stephanie Prinzessin von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, daughter of Karl Anton Fürst von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and Josephine Prinzessin von Baden, on 18 May 1858 at Lisbon, PortugalG. He died on 11 November 1861 at age 24 at Lisbon, PortugalG.
He succeeded as the Rei Pedro V de Portugal in 1853.3
