Walter Long was born in 1712 at Wiltshire, England^G.¹ He was the son of Thomas Long and Mary Abbott.¹ He died circa January 1807, unmarried.¹ He was buried on 3 February 1807 at Whaddon, Wiltshire, England^G.¹ His will was proven (by probate) on 16 February 1807.¹
     In 1772 he was engaged to Elizabeth Anne Linley (was was only 16), but broke it off when she told him that "she could never be happy as his wife". She subsequently eloped with a young playwright, Richard Brinsley Sheridan.¹
