Alexander John Forbes-Leith, 1st and last Baron Leith of Fyvie was born on 6 August 1847.1 He was the son of Rear-Admiral John James Leith and Margaret Forbes.1 He married Marie Louise January, daughter of Derick Algernon January, on 19 October 1871.1 He died on 14 November 1925 at age 78 at Hartwell House, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, EnglandG.1,2
     He was educated at Berlin, GermanyG.1 He was educated at École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr, Saint-Cyr, Île-de-France, FranceG.1 He was educated at Dr. Burney's Naval Academy, Gosport, Hampshire, EnglandG.1 He was commissioned in 1860 with the rank of Cadet, in the service of the Royal Navy.1 He gained the rank of Midshipman in 1861.1 He fought in the New Zealand Wars between 1864 and 1865.1 He was awarded the Royal Humane Society Medal for saving a boy from drowning.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1869.1 He retired from the military in 1872.1 He was president of the Joliet Steel Company.1 He was president of the Illinois Steel Company.1 He was organiser of the Federal Steel Company.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)3 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.)3 He was created 1st Baron Leith of Fyvie, co.
