Colonel John Charles Campbell Daunt, V.C. was born on 8 November 1832 at Autranches, Normandy, France.2 He was the son of Richard William Daunt and Bridget Hughes.2 He married Jane Alice Maddison Philpott, daughter of Richard Price Philpott and Emma Stapley Clowes, on 13 May 1863 at Holmwood, Dorking, Surrey, England.1,2 He died on 15 April 1886 at age 53 at Bristol, England.1,2
He was commissioned on 20 July 1852 with the rank of Ensign, in the service of the 70th Bengal Native Infantry.2 He fought in the Indian Mutiny in 1857.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 11th Bengal Native Infantry.2 He was awarded the Victoria Cross (V.C.), for his actions on 2 Oct 1857.2 He was District Superintendant in the Bengal Police Department in April 1862.2 He gained the rank of Brevet Captain in July 1864.2 He gained the rank of Major in July 1872.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in July 1878.2 He gained the rank of Brevet Colonel in July 1882.2
