William Astell was born on 27 January 1733/34.2 He was the son of Godfrey Thornton and Margaret Astell.2 He married Elizabeth Thornton, daughter of Richard Thornton, on 11 July 1758.2 He died on 6 April 1801 at age 67, without issue.2
     He was given the name of Thomas Thornton at birth.2 On 21 February 1777 his name was legally changed to Thomas Astell by Royal Licence.2
