     He was educated at Edinburgh University, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1 He was Professor of Physics between 1897 and 1918 at South African College, Cape Town, Cape Province, South AfricaG.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society of Edinburgh (F.R.S.E.)1 He was Principal between 1917 and 1918 at South African College, Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa.1 He held the office of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town in 1918.1 He was appointed Knight Bachelor in June 1920.1
