Interview with Fabio Pignatelli, Goblin Rebirth

  • ️Mon Jun 08 2015

- Hello, Fabio! This summer you are going to release your first CD with Goblin Rebirth. First of all, what is the current line-up?
- Hello, the line-up is: bass: Fabio Pignatelli, drums: Agostino Marangolo, guitar: Giacomo Anselmi, Keyboards: Aidan Zammit & Danilo Cherni.

- How did it happen that you got signed with Relapse Records? Do you think that with their help you'll get a proper promotion of your upcoming release?
- People from the label came to hear Goblin play in Philadelphia – three of us were performing with the band and that’s how the first approach was made. We immediately felt very good with Relapse and we are sure that they will give us good promotion

- Recently you presented your first single "Requiem for X".

What was the response from the public? What can you say about the track itself?
- The first response from fans is very good. This track was born from an arpeggio and melody by Giacomo and than I developed the score and composition.. The music is a funeral ode to X, the character narrated by this album.

- How could you describe the whole album in general? What was the main challenge for you while composing the new songs?
- I think it’s a good album – we’re all very satisfied. It has rich atmospheres and is performed with a lot of energy. All the personalities of the musicians emerge in a natural way. There’s a lot of variety in the compositions and, in my opinion, the record is easy to listen to. It would make a perfect soundtrack. Now all we need is the film!
It wasn’t particularly challenging. Goblin Rebirth was born when Agostino and I felt the need to perform the “less known” Goblin soundtracks  created without Simonetti and Morante. We joined up with three musicians we hold in high esteem and who are especially good friends. As soon as we began playing we decided to try something new and original. We started coming up with ideas and realised something good could come out of it. Now that the album is done we’re very happy, and hope our listeners will like it too.

- How do you usually start writing songs? Is it a collective process or is it rather an individual task for each of you?
- Normally we start from individual task and then work together, so anyone can contribute,, sometimes to the score, sometimes to the arrangement. It depends on the stimulus level that everyone has.

- Does it happen that firstly you imagine a scene from a movie or come up with any story and only then start writing the music and developing the story into something huge?
- If I’m not writing a soundtrack I usually start with a phrase, or even just a sound or effect – something that I find stimulating. Then I just go with the flow and develop the ideas in complete freedom. I’m not very good at writing pop songs (I’ve written very few) but I feel good with film scoring. I don’t need to follow images for inspiration – the music itself helps me develop the composition, which goes hand in hand with the arrangement . I create my own little film! To me writing a song is always like taking an imaginary trip.

- How do you like the cover of your album? Who is the artist and who came up with that art concept? This time it literally shows the rebirth of goblin, doesn't it?
- I like it - it's the rebirth of another Goblin, always Goblin, but different. Orion Landau is the artist. We came up with the art concept together – the whole band contributed to the process.

- Let's get back in time and talk a bit about your cooperation with Dario Argento. How did you meet? Could you recall how was it for you to work with him for the first time?
- I met him for the first time during the recording of Profondo Rosso. We had been called as session players to record Gaslini’s music, but Dario and Gaslini had disagreements in the studio and we were asked to finish writing the soundtrack ourselves. We accepted the challenge and that very night, starting with my arpeggio, we wrote and finished Profondo Rosso. We could see joy in his eyes when he heard it. Even the record company immediately understood the value of the piece

- What soundtrack that you wrote for Dario Argento's movies was the most important for you as for the band? And which one stays your favourite one and why?
- Most important for us was Deep Red, but the one i prefer is Suspiria and right after, Zombi. Suspiria because i think was very original and ahead of its time, and Zombi because it is perfect on the movie and…. i love the two main themes !!!

- Do you have any favourite movie soundtracks? Is there any director you would like to work with on one of his movies?
- There are many soundtrack i love but the two I prefer are Blade Runner and Escape from NY, and also the director i would like to work are Ridley Scott and John Carpenter, because  their fantastic atmospheres would stimulate my creativity.

- How do you plan to support your new release? Will there be any tour?
- We are working on it. I hope we can make a tour very soon, for now just some single shows.

- Thank you for this interview, Fabio. Would you like to add anything in the end?
- I just want to give my thankses to Relapse, to the fans and all to all the people are helping us in this project .
