Doom Patrol (2009) - TV Tropes
- ️Mon Sep 02 2024
The fifth volume of the Doom Patrol comic began publication in October 2009, written by Keith Giffen with artwork by Matthew Clark and Ron Randall.
This iteration of the team for the most part went with a back-to-basics approach and had the roster consist of the same members as when the team started: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl and the Chief. The first seven issues had a backup feature starring the Metal Men written by J. M. DeMatteis.
The series was eventually cancelled in July 2011 after 22 issues, as a certain event served as the vanguard for a complete reboot of the DC Universe.
Doom Patrol (2009) contains examples of:
- Back for the Dead: Nudge and Grunt from John Byrne's run resurface, only for the former to be shot dead and the latter to run off with her body, never to be seen again.
- The Bus Came Back: Crazy Jane and Danny the Street return when they haven't been seen since the end of Grant Morrison's run on the second volume.
- Catchphrase Insult: Robotman in this series frequently insults Negative Man by saying "Stuff it, Trainor" to him.
- End-of-Series Awareness: Ambush Bug ends up thwarting the villain's plan in the final issue by whispering something, responses from the villain implying that the comic has been cancelled to make room for Flashpoint tie-ins.
- Envying the Afflicted: In the first issue, Rita expresses envy towards Nudge, who recently got killed while on a mission, because Rita is suicidal (because she had died before in a genuine Heroic Sacrifice but got resurrected against her will) but can't bring herself to actually commit the act, and thus she's jealous that Nudge got the death that she feels she deserves.
Rita: She didn't earn it, you know. It's the unfairness of it all that gets to me. (beat) How cold-hearted is that? A young girl dies and I'm acting like the runner-up in a beauty pageant.
- Full-Frontal Assault:
- Issue 7 has Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man go on a rampage in the nude.
- In the tenth issue, the Porcelain Doll fights the Doom Patrol without any clothes on.
- Naked People Are Funny: Though it has nothing at all to do with what happens in the actual story, the cover to the 20th issue shows Robotman, Negative Man and Elasti-Girl stranded near a rock in the sea while butt naked.
Negative Man: So...that went well.
Robotman: Stuff it, Trainor. - Power Perversion Potential: Steve Dayton is retconned as being an abusive pervert who ended up divorced from Rita Farr when it was discovered that he used the Mento helmet to make Rita submit to his carnal whims without her consent.
- The Smurfette Principle: For the first time since the original Arnold Drake series, Elasti-Girl is once more the sole female member of the team.
