Critical Status Support - TV Tropes

  • ️Sun Apr 06 2025

Unlike Critical Status Buff or Pain and Gain, which give extra buffs to a character in critical status or has taken damage, Critical Status Support gives extra buffs to characters whenever their allies are in critical status or have taken damage. Often this is a skill for The Medics to help heal and save their allies more effectively, although occasionally it gives non-supportive buffs to the user, likely to give more power to defeat the enemies threatening their allies.

See also Kill One, Others Get Stronger for when buffs are gained when allies are killed. Contrast Injured Vulnerability for skills that give the user extra buffs against opponents in critical status. Compare Turns Red, where a boss becomes more powerful when it takes a certain amount of damage, and Taking the Bullet, where a character may take damage in place of another who is in critical status.

Card Battle Games

  • Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft: The Floating Watcher card reads "Whenever your hero takes damage on your turn, gain +2/+2." (This means it deals 2 more damage when attacking and gets 2 more Hit Points.) If you're wondering why you would take damage on your turn, it's because Warlocks use a lot of Blood Magic.

First-Person Shooter

  • Overwatch 2:
    • Brigitte's Quick Fix Perk causes Repair Packs to instantly heal additional health to critical health allies.
    • Kirko's Urgent Care Perk causes Healing Ofuda projectile speed to increase by 50% when seeking critical health allies.
    • Soldier 76's Field Emergency Perk causes Biotic Field’s healing to be increased by 100% on critical health allies.
  • Team Fortress 2:
    • The Medic is able to get warnings whenever teammates are under a certain level of health, which can be adjusted in the options.
    • Medics gain more Ubercharge from healing low-health allies than full-health ones.
    • Inverted with Medic's Overheal mechanics, which characters at full health will get extra health that will decay over time if not constantly healed by the Medic.
  • Vermintide II: The Foot Knight talent "It's Hero Time" clears the cooldown on his special ability whenever a teammate is incapacitated, letting him literally charge to the rescue.

Real-Time Strategy

  • Dawn of War II: Inverted; the multiplayer Commissar Lord can have an ability that heals units around him as he takes damage.

Role-Playing Games

  • Yo-kai Watch:
    • The Skill Second Wind makes the Yo-kai with it restore a hefty chunk to an ally Yo-kai when their health is lowered beyond a certain threshold.
    • Yo-kai Watch 2: Kin and Gin, the Big Bad's Co-Dragons, are siblings who each have a Skill, Gin’s Chagrin and Familiar Feud respectively, that raises their Spirit stat whenever the other's Hit Points are lowered beyond a certain threshold. When refought in the Psychic Specters expansion alongside their brother Bronzlow, this still applies, but with the added caveat that hitting him at all instead triggers Avenge Bronzlow! which increases both twins' Spirit stat.

Third-Person Shooter

  • Warframe:
    • The Loyal Companion Mod for Companions grants its owner Damage Reduction when their health falls under a certain threshold while making the Companion invulnerable while taunting enemies.
    • The Guardian Mod for Sentinels automatically restores some of its owner's shields when they are reduced to zero.
    • The Sanctuary and Shelter Mods for Sentinels and Beasts respectively create a shield around a Tenno that is reviving a fallen ally.

Turn-Based Strategy

  • Fire Emblem Heroes:
    • The Rehabilitate Staff heals more health for allies under 50% health than those above.
    • The Wings of Mercy skill allows a unit to warp to an available adjacent space next to an ally under a certain HP threshold. It is an inheritable skill advised to be given to healers and dancers.
    • Inverted with Nemesis' Dark Creator Sword, which reduces damage from the first combat in either player or enemy phase by a certain percentage depending on the number of allies over a certain percentage of health.

Literature

  • May I Ask for One Final Thing?: Prince Julius' divine blessing, "Tale of the Hero", only activates when his One True Love (who happens to be Scarlet El Vandimion) is on death's door or otherwise in mortal danger, but when it does, he becomes pretty much omnipotent for as long as it takes him to save her. Later on in the story, he even uses this to gauge how much danger the two of them are: as long as his blessing remains inactive, things aren't really bad yet.

Tabletop Games

  • Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition
    • The Ardent class has some features: Ardent Alacrity allows allies to move around if the ardent is bloodied by an attack, and Ardent Eruption gives a damage bonus for allies when the ardent is bloodied.
    • The Runepriest Hammer of Vengeance's Avenging Hammer has an additional effect if an enemy hits or misses a bloodied ally, based on a chosen rune state.
    • Cleric's Divine Punishment causes additional damage for each nearby bloodied ally.
