Firefly Scene (trope)

A touching moment.note

"One by one, more strange insects lit up and started to fill the air. There must have been hundreds of them. With only the little light their bodies gave off, they completely illuminated the dark field."

Many people find fireflies (or lightning bugs) beautiful. After all, they're basically tiny flying balls of light. Summer evenings are made so much better when illuminated by tiny glowing bugs, and catching fireflies is a fun summer pastime for many children.

The same is true in fiction. Many works of fiction include a moment of watching fireflies, with said moment being significant in showing something about the character or their growth. It can be used to set a scene of romance, show how a younger character is innocent, a Friendship Moment, or just a happy/meaningful time in one's life. And they always seem to show up when characters need cheering up.

A sub-trope of Bioluminescence Is Cool. Compare with Stargazing Scene and Chasing a Butterfly. Compare also with Lighting Bug for when fireflies are used as a light source. Contrast with Sucky Summer, as many consider fireflies as one of the better parts of summer. May help set an important scene/moment during That One Summer.
