Speech-Bubble Censoring - TV Tropes
- ️Sun Dec 13 2009
A subtrope of Scenery Censor specific to comic style formats. Simply, a character's nudity is covered by a speech, thought, or sound effect bubble. It's usually used to imply that characters within the work are getting a full eyeful, while still preventing the audience from seeing anything.
See also Censor Steam, Speech-Bubbles Interruption. Not to be confused with Symbol Swearing, where the text within the speech bubble is censored.

Anime & Manga
- In the Alice in the Country of Hearts manga, there's a point where Blood, Elliot and the twins are having an obligatory bathhouse scene and the twins make a few smart remarks. After Elliot stands up to reprimand them, a speech bubble repeatedly manages to show up to cover up his bare butt (he's only shown from the waist up in front views).
- Ayakashi Triangle:
- One chapter has Matsuri's guarding Suzu from an attack while she's taking a bath. This leads to a page where she is covering her breasts with her hands, but her genitals are only obscured by her speech bubble. Matsuri ends up looking down despite himself, which is actually what Suzu wanted.
- A stranger possible example occurs when Matsuri ends up with his head under Suzu's skirt. The ensuing Panty Shot is as detailed as usual (including visible cameltoe), but Suzu's sigh of surprise covers a very small portion in the center of her crotch. The dialogue vaguely suggests Suzu was on her period, and the speech bubble was obscuring the indent of a tampon.
- In chapter 78 of Blue Exorcist, speech bubbles are used to cover Shura's nipples in several panels.
- Chainsaw Man:
- One panel in Part 1 has Denji telling himself to be faithful to Makima and turn down Skinny Dipping with Reze. In the following panel, Denji has stripped down and his crotch it obscured by the only thought bubble, labelled "Dammit."
- Part 2 has a speech balloon obscure view for a Reveal Shot rather than censorship. The instant Public Safety breaks into Asa's home, her arm is obscured by her speech balloon in the corner of the page. Several pages later, we see Yoshida attacked so fast, he'd already cut the arm off before Asa could touch something with it to create a weapon.
- Non-nudity related example: In the manga of Death Note, the Third Kira of Yotsuba Group (Higuchi), whose identity is meant to be a surprise in the manga, thinks that he should use his Death Note to kill Matsuda, but can't because if he went home alone, the others would suspect him, and his thought balloon obscures his face, preventing the reader from finding out who it is. By contrast, the anime does not attempt to hide that Higuchi is Kira.
- Fairy Tail:
- At the end of the Fairy Tail Special chapter "Welcome to Fairy Hills", when Lucy's cat costume disappears, a narration box is placed in front of her butt, which is a bit weird since it isn't censored in a later chapter where she flies naked around the country's capital, but then again, the series continually goes Hotter and Sexier.
- In chapter 365, when Erza is held captive and stripped naked, the censoring of her nipples alternates between sound effects, speech bubbles, her hair, and occasionally, her captor.
- In the 2010 Christmas episode of Hetalia: Axis Powers, when the characters all have to strip to check their bodies for a special mark, copious amounts of speech bubbles are used to cover up all "vital regions".
- A rather disturbing instance in Hunter × Hunter with Hisoka. While naked and chatting with two twelve-year-old boys, his speech bubble shifts upwards as he becomes... excited.
- Used in the Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi manga once or twice.
- In the first chapter of Minimum, as the miniature girl takes care of her Potty Emergency in the sink, her genitals are covered up by her speech bubble at one point.
- Moriarty the Patriot: In The Adventure of the Four Servants, Moran is naked in the changing room when Louis shows Bond around—and he stands up proudly claiming his body a work of art when demanding Bond leave—and that speech bubble covers any naughty bits.
- In one chapter of My Hero Academia, Momo destroys her top with her creation power, and her modesty is only preserved by her dialogue. Jiro gets an eyeful, though.
- A non-nudity related example in One Piece: the perpetually-hidden left eye of Sanji was once blocked by a word balloon when he was hanging upside down, and thus could not hide it with his hair as he usually does.
- The published English language version of Tenjho Tenge has a lot of this artificially inserted for censorship purposes.
- To Love Ru: Yui's panties were accidentally cut off at the beginning of the chapter, so only Rito's exclamation prevents readers from seeing everything. And as for Rito, on the next page he gets hit on the head by a flying teapot and forgets about it.
Comic Books
- An issue of The Dandy (1937) has a single speech bubble covering up Winker Watson and a school friend's bits during a shower scene (and a sign being held up by an off-screen character, saying "Not a pretty sight", over another schoolboy).
- DC Comics:
- Done in Empowered when Emp demonstrates her suit's ability to turn invisible. Her pubic region is obscured by Ninjette's exclamation of surprise. Another time when the Caged Demonwolf discovers that Ninjette is shaved "down there", his exclamation of surprise obscures the visual proof.
- Marvel Comics:
- Used with Domino in The Incredible Hulks #608, during the Red She-Hulk backup story.
- Loki: Agent of Asgard starts with a Shower of Awkward — and once Loki's out of the shower there's a very strategically placed speech bubble, just barely in place.
- Mighty Avengers #12 features a scene with Nick Fury in bed with Countess DeFontaine, where her bare behind is hidden by one of these.
- New Avengers #14: a scene of Spider-Woman I (Jessica Drew) on an operating table nude, surrounded by doctors. Her right breast is hidden by a utensil tray held up by one of the doctors. Her left is covered up by a word balloon. Recreated in #42.
- Son of M #1 gives Quicksilver a Shower Scene. His butt is partially covered by a narration box.
- In Uncanny X-Men #245 we see a room full of dead bodies, Tessa’s word balloon covers up one of the men’s heads, implying he’s been decapitated.
- The 24th issue of What The—?! had a segment called "Misprints in the Comics", which had humorous situations and premises happening to Marvel Comics characters because of a single word in the series' title being changed. The panel for New Warriors had the team become the Nude Warriors and forced to go home naked except for their masks after a stay in Las Vegas. Nova's crotch is covered up by his speech balloon, pointing out how handy it is to have it censoring his naughty bits.
- The final page of X-Factor #47 (current volume) where Monet is nude and her butt is covered up by a word balloon.
- Tom Strong: America's Best Comics' The Many Worlds of Tesla Strong features an alternate reality with No Nudity Taboo. Discomfort ensues. For Tesla
◊ anyway.
◊
- In Super Agent Jon Le Bon!'s second book, when Jon is naked, at some point his speech bubble covers his private parts.
Comic Strips
- Used as a gag in the August 12, 2009 Beetle Bailey strip, where Miss Buxley tore her skirt and is covered up by a speech bubble from another character who acknowledges that she's talking so that Miss Buxley is covered up until she can repair her skirt.
- In Luann, word bubbles were often used to cover Tiffany’s father's face before it was revealed in a later storyline.
- In 1954, The Providence Bulletin complained about the Pogo character Simple J. Malarkey (a caricature of Joseph McCarthy), saying that they would drop the strip if Malarkey "ever showed his face again." Walt Kelly continued to use Malarkey, but covered his face in every panel, including a sequence in which his face was always behind his own speech bubble.
- In the November 15, 2023 installment of The Phantom, semi-heroic pirate Savarna is staying with the Walkers and using one of the cave showers. Her ass is covered up by one of Diana's speech bubbles, thanking a Bandar woman for bringing towels.
Films — Live-Action
- In the Matt Helm film The Silencers, a stripper's breasts are covered up by the title.
- Same effect, but more (in)famous: Barbarella.
- And again with the sexually explicit film Romance (1999), whose cover art depicts main character Marie topless with the title of the film across her bust.
Literature
- Scott McCloud does this in Making Comics when he talks about talk bubbles. When he mentions the placement of talk bubbles, the panel shows him as Michelangelo's David with his hair and Nerd Glasses, and his speech is covering where the statue's penis would be.
- Rare non-comic-book example: in the Sesame Street picture book "Do You Want to Play Hide-and-Seek with Lovable, Furry Old Grover?" Grover tries (unsuccessfully) to hide behind his own word balloons.
Video Games
- In Project Hospital, the patient's groin gets censored by a thought bubble whenever they use the toilet.
Web Comics
- Apricot Cookie(s)!: When Apricot is hesitating to put on her bikini in the Beach Episode, her lower parts are covered up by Butter's talking.
- Ayuri: Accidentally used in one strip due to poor planning, for which the author apologizes in The Rant.
This was supposed to be the first instance of full frontal (well, lateral) nudity in the comic. But then there wasn't enough room at the top of the image for a text box. So now it looks like Ayuri is censored. Oh well, I'll plan these out better in the future.
- Used in one strip
in Because I'm Depressed to spare us the sight of Ben's Levitra-induced stiffy.
- Seen in Blaster Nation — e.g. here.
- Blip has Bishop's roommate naked.
- This
Carry On strip owes a lot to Fred's carefully-placed speech bubbles.
- Used once with an unusually oblong bubble in The Class Menagerie.
- A shower scene
in Crossoverkill uses this to hide Mindmistress and Hoodoo's assets. Poor Yuuki.
- Dan and Mab's Furry Adventures: In this strip,
Abel demonstrates his shapeshifting abilities to Dan by changing into a female form... without putting on a shirt first. Guess where one of his speech bubbles is located.
- El Goonish Shive
- Used on Nanase
during the birthday party arc, and more so in a filler artwork drawn soon after.
- No topless Lisa either
for you, folk.
- Used again, this time for Grace here
.
- Used on Nanase
- Jane taking a shower
in Everyday Heroes.
- Very common in Exiern. Just one prominent example.
- Used in Fite! after Guz's Full-Frontal Assault. Made stranger by the bubble in question
being Visible Silence.
- Girl Genius: In Mamma Gkikia's dressing screen panel
presumably featuring a naked girl, is obscured by Gilgamesh Wulfenbach, saying:
Gil: So — does this place have a back door?
- Grrl Power:
- Gunnerkrigg Court has a variant: the Norns look like younger, present-day, and older versions of whoever's looking at them; when Brunhilde the Valkyrie introduces them, their faces are covered
by the speech bubbles with their names, hiding how they appear to non-mortal eyes.
- Done here
in The KAMics.
- Last Res0rt takes an entire page of Jigsaw and Daisy in the buff (for a clothing scan) and obscures it with their conversation
.
- Ménage à 3 employs this for comedy on occasion:
- In strip #1, Gary walks in on Matt and Dillon having sex; the junction of their bodies is covered up by Matt's speech bubble.
- See strip #750 (June 4, 2013; nonetheless NSFW) for one example. It's maybe doubly necessary and doubly funny here because Senna is Transgender, and casual readers may not realize exactly what they're not seeing.
- Strip #756 (June 20, 2013, probably NSFW) also uses this. The added twist here is that Yuki may be able see the thing which is covered by the speech bubble — angles are hard to judge — but it will be better for everyone if she can't.
- Misfile performs a variant, stretching one nude body (Ash's) across three panels following a Shower of Angst. The naughty bits are hidden behind the panel breaks.
- Mynarski Forest managed with mere large text, no bubble.
- The Non-Adventures of Wonderella: "Panic at the Bistro"
has Wonderella get embarrassed over answering "You too" to a waiter saying "Enjoy your meal." Then she just keeps thinking about it embarrasedly everywhere she goes after that, including in the shower, where the thought bubble comes in handy.
- Happens in a panel of the The Order of the Stick when Roy and Durkon yelling NO briefly covers Elan's Genitals.
- Paradox Space uses this in the Summerteen Romance arc; at one point Tavros has a Bizarre Alien Biology response when someone flirts with him. The imagery note squicked out so many people that the authors covered it up with a bunch of speech bubbles of Dave humorously describing what was going on.
- Questionable Content: Dora gets one for one breast only
, the other one is behind Tai's arm.
- Shot and Chaser: Tre is introduced taking promotional photos for an OnlyFans creator, who is topless. Her breasts stay mostly covered by her arm and speech bubbles from the reader's perspective.
- In Sluggy Freelance, for the "Years of Yarncraft" arc, Zoe's speech bubble covers the assets of a Rose Elf,
while explaining why at the same time.
Zoe: Her outfit is totally see-through and she's not wearing any underwear!
- In a non-censorship example, Something*Positive uses this to obscure a revelation by covering other speech bubbles here
and here
. The first one is even part of a conversation lampshading its purpose.
- Thanks to this trope, Sunstone manages to be tasteful despite its status as an erotic character study of a BDSM relationship.
- In the Team Fortress 2 comic, when Soldier is nude and covered in honey again, his crotch is covered by a text panel referring readers to the nonexistent comic Naked Tales of Valor.
- Turn Signals on a Land Raider did this with daemonettes. They wouldn't have had to bother if daemons had appeared in the comic after their recent set of models were released.
