The Amazing Digital Circus E4: Fast Food Masquerade - TV Tropes
- ️Thu Dec 12 2024
All the fun of wage slavery with none of the wages! ...or the fun...
Caine: "Let's have one where we all work at a fast food place..." Is that normal?
Jax: Who wrote that?
Gangle: Uh... yeah. That's pretty normal.
Caine: Great! That means today's adventure is... An Honest Hard Day's Work at Spudsy's Restaurant Chain! And [[Gangle]] can be the shift manager!
The circus gang works as employees in the fast food restaurant Spudsy's... with the normally meek Gangle as the manager!
The episode starts with Ragatha teaching Gangle on softball. When Gangle finally gets to pitch, Jax, as always, breaks Gangle's comedy mask (accidentally this time). Zooble offers to give Gangle something as Ragatha and Jax bicker.
The next scene shows Gangle at Zooble's room, and Zooble gives her a plastic unbreakable comedy mask. Soon the gang goes to see Caine for the next mission. Caine announces their next adventure: The Curse of the Violent Psychopath Butcher. He barely gets to explain any further than the name, however, as Pomni, who quite literally went through hell in the last episode, objects to going through any more horrific situations. Caine sarcastically asks if they can suggest a better scenario, to which Zooble points out that there's a suggestion box that he never bothers to look at. Gangle asks Caine if there's a "normal" mission, and, after Caine looks through some suggestions, tells them there is: An Honest Hard Day’s Work at Spudsy’s Restaurant Chain.
Zooble at first refuses to join the mission, but Kinger volunteers to stay behind in place of Zooble. When Zooble asks why they have to be in the mission when Kinger volunteers to stay behind, Caine tells them to shut up and opens a trap door under them that takes them to said mission.
Entering Spudsy's, the four are set to work, as Zooble finishes falling into the building. Gangle tries to get everyone started and tests all the machines. Jax immediately puts Ragatha in the deep fryer, challenging Gangle to do something about it. She calls upper management, which is in fact Caine, asking if bad employees could have a punishment at the end of the day. Caine agrees, as this will bring motivation to the adventure. When questioned, Gangle calls it a manic episode with many more seasons, before giving him his jobs and leaving him and the fried Ragatha alone.
In the breakfast rush, Zooble burns their spatula hand on the grill and Pomni is greeted by the first customer, Orbsman, an NPC from a previous adventure Pomni wasn't in. He speaks in unintelligible speech, being translated as a Number 57. Jax comments on his dislike for Orbsman, to which Gangle criticizes him for. A mannequin NPC comes up to the counter, asking for the Stupid Burger with the Stupid Sauce, being addicted. Ragatha goes to prepare it, but gets some in her eye which warps her perception to seeing a creepy Gangle, and then a high-state.
Jax comments that Zooble is actually participating in the adventure, not believing Caine would do anything malicious if they didn't. Zooble thinks the only reason he doesn't is that he likes them. Pomni at the counter runs into Gummigoo and his friends, Max and Chad, who do not recognize her and order like normal. A panicked and stammering Pomni lets them sit down before crawling over to the three's table. Gummigoo looks at her, confused, as she claims she just wanted to say to him. Gangle learns of this from an intoxicated Ragatha, which she words as flirting with an NPC. The manager yells at Pomni to get back to work. Pomni tries to have more time with him, but a manic Gangle keeps pushing, having a cracking sound appear from her mask.
The lunch rush starts. A livid Jax goes to the drive-thru and sees the Gloink Queen, accompanied by Gloinks, come up to the window, questioning what it is. A mannequin hogs the front of the restaurant line, instead eating cereal. Though it and the other mannequins behind are shortly eaten by the Gloink Queen, who orders 300 cheeseburgers. As Pomni questions this, she spots the gummy gators leaving and requests a second, leaving a mannequin to get beaten up by the Gloinks. The queen demands them to stop as Ragatha giddily leans on the counter asking if all the Gloinks have names. The queen confirms her theory, saying she would be a terrible mother if they didn't. The doll thinks of this as beautiful. Pomni tries to speak to Gummigoo, spotting his confused face, instead opting to wish him a good day. He wishes her one back as the two part ways.
Gangle requests Jax to clean the bathroom. Jax repeatedly rejects her pushes for him to be a model and positive employee, saying she's better when she's sad. This causes another cracking sound to come from Gangle. She suggests, after a long pause, that he just needs more training. A big hand grabs Jax into a dark room with a Spudsy's Instructional Employee Training video. The video says it's cool to have dreams about being things such as a manga artist, but that they can be completely unrealistic and that working at fast food chains can be the better option. It then asks if the viewer is smiling, Jax isn't, making the video's Gangle become unhappy and ask "Why not?" In the room, a chair and four hands trap Jax against the screen as an employee reevaluation starts, flickering two masks in front of a bewildered (and increasingly panicked) Jax.
Zooble is working as normal, but Ragatha is still disoriented, having only made five or six burgers out of 300. Gangle is requested by the former for help, who is mad about paint being huffed outside of breaks. Ragatha challenges Gangle's authority, ignoring her concern and attempted motivation, eventually flat-out calling her annoying with the happy mask, causing Gangle to crack once more, deciding to opt for a time out and asking Zooble to help Ragatha instead. A hand sends a perplexed Jax back to the drive-thru, patting him on the head. He walks to see the time still at 12pm, yelling at Gangle that it's probably broken. The broken Gangle questions if it's just the clock or if everyone is broken. An annoyed Jax witnesses her spiral into anxious insanity. It turns out the clock is, in fact, broken.
Finally the dinner rush starts, as Pomni waves the Gloink family goodbye, having learnt about Gloinks reproduction. An exhausted Jax sees the stimulated Ragatha on the floor, who greets him weirdly when he asks her to move. He calls her drunk before walking past and flopping onto the counter next to Pomni. She's surprised by his genuine conversation starter asking about her, saying she's doing fine. Jax wishes he could agree as Gangle calls him over once more. Customers are met with satisfaction as Gangle steps outside to take off her new mask and scream to herself. She doesn't notice until after that Pomni was in the same area, who asks about her well being. Gangle sits down on the pavement, commenting that her comedy mask is usually broken now. Pomni tries to reassure her, asking if she's talked to someone about her issues, such as Ragatha. Gangle brushes that off, saying it's hard to tell if Ragatha is genuine. Before any more suggestions, the mask is put back on as Gangle awkwardly goes back in, leaving Pomni alone.
Jax waits for the 9pm to hit, before deciding to "clock out", waving the saddened Gangle off and sitting in a car labelled with his name. Zooble comes to see the manager, saying that they'll probably need to drive Ragatha back. Gangle tells them Ragatha will get off in an hour, so all four decide to stick around. Eventually, Zooble leaves with Ragatha, while Gangle had not moved in that time, severely depressed and delusional in the quiet and dark kitchen. Pomni calls her back to reality, offering to close up the restaurant instead. After being reassured that it's okay, Gangle leaves, Pomni commenting on the weird day.
Gangle dejectedly stands near the chain's doors, looking up at the starry sky. She takes off her new mask and throws it away, being able to weakly smile and run in slow-mo under a street lamp, dancing into the road directly in front of a large truck. Before it can hit her, she is sent into an office run by Caine for a performance review. He calls the day productive overall, but brings up Gangle cutting her shift short, breaking from the stress and running into oncoming traffic. Theoretically, Gangle could push the blame onto everyone else to dodge point docks, but Gangle rejects the offer, saying she just cracked under pressure. Her score is knocked down to a B+, having nothing to say for herself. Caine takes this as a positive thing and sticks her photo and score onto the board with everyone else (including Kinger). before sending her off. She awkwardly walks out before Caine comically glitches in the room.
Back in the circus tent, Pomni, Ragatha, Jax and Kinger are sitting together while Gangle has isolated herself with her drawings. Zooble finds her and reassures her of people still wanting to talk to her. They brush off the new mask not working, saying something will work eventually. Gangle wipes her tear, saying she doesn't deserve Zooble, as the two walk towards the group.
