  • Every single street and most of the major buildings are named for horror/SF authors or famous stories.
    • The subway in Silent Hill 4 can take you along the King Street Line or the Lynch Street Line ...but you might just want to stay put if you know what's good for you.
  • Silent Hill 1 features the "K. Gordon" key, a reference to Sonic Youth guitarist Kim Gordon.
  • Silent Hill 1 additionally has the "Orridge Bridge Control Room', which is an obvious reference to Throbbing Gristle's singer Genesis P Orridge.
  • The Shining gets a couple. REDRUM is prominently written on a door in the first game, and a photo, in style of the one in the films ending, can be found in the motel. Torn posters for the film can also be found in Silent Hill 2.
  • Adrian Lyne's film Jacob's Ladder, cited by the development crew as a primary inspiration for the series, gets quite a few.
    • Alchemilla Hospital is a dead ringer for the nightmarish madhouse Jacob goes through in this scene.
    • An apartment in Silent Hill 2 is also called the "Lyne House". There's also the gurney sequence when James warps to the alternate hospital. James' green field jacket is also very similar to the military M-65 worn by Jacob Singer in the film.
    • The subway sequence in Silent Hill 3 echoes an early scene right down to the name of the street Jacob/Heather is trying to reach. A street in Shepherd's Glen in Homecoming also bears Lyne's name.
  • Heather can use a lightsaber. Though according to Word of God, this is actually meant to be a reference to Space Sheriff Gavan.
  • There's a scene in Silent Hill 3 in the Dark Office Building where a lone wheelchair is visible from a great distance, illuminated by a single light. Word of God has confirmed this is a shout out to the memorably creepy "Hello...Gordon" scene from "Session 9".
  • In Origins, you can win the "Codebreaker" outfit (SH3 Vincent's vest) by inputting the Konami Code. Additionally, the Collector outfit makes Travis look like Gordon Freeman and the Explorer outfit is evocative of Indiana Jones.
  • Shattered Memories has a movie theater which contains arcade machines for Contra, Gradius and Rush'n Attack.
  • The dramatis personae section of the first game's ending credits is done in a surprisingly upbeat manner identical to the cast credits at the end of Predator.
  • The haunted mansion ride in Silent Hill 3 has some references to a more famous haunted mansion. Its name is a reference to the Borley Rectory, a house in Essex once reputed to be the most haunted place in England (and long since burned down).
  • Compare the design of Amnion to the human victims in Gyo.
  • The final boss arena in Silent Hill 4 is modeled after the room that introduces the planetary representatives in The Holy Mountain.
  • Eddie Dombrowski in Silent Hill 2 was named after Eddie Murphy because he was originally meant to be a much more cheerful character.
  • The Heaven's Night strip club is modeled after the bar in Blue Velvet.
    • Additionally, the infamous scene where James hides from Pyramid Head in a closet is based on a very similar scene in the film.
  • The angled camera when James enters Lakeview Hotel is a likely reference to the finale of Pet Sematary.
  • The plot of Silent Hill 2 is almost identical to that of the Italian film Fantasma D'amore. And by "almost identical", we mean "dangerously close to outright plagiarism."
  • The "Death Machine" seen in the final boss fight of Silent Hill 4 is a dead ringer for the FTL drive from Event Horizon.
  • Alessa's house from the first game is a spitting image of the painting "Christina's World" by Andrew Wyeth.
  • Midwich Elementary from the first game was directly modeled after the school from Kindergarten Cop of all places.
  • The plot point of venturing into a serial killer's Mental World in Silent Hill 4 is lifted straight out of The Cell. Though the game's entire plot itself was inspired by the Ryu Murakami novel Coin Locker Babies.
  • In addition to a woman seen on the cover of a Japanese beauty magazine, Claudia Wolf's design was based on Concha from Santa Sangre.
  • Downpour was heavily inspired by One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, most evident in the main character's name: Murphy Pendleton.
