POCHI SCIENCE - TV Tropes
- ️Mon Dec 25 2023
POCHI SCIENCE is a South Korean YouTube animation channel.
The channel's videos revolve around the titular Pochi, a young scientist who goes after dangerous entities from different works and converts them into harmless anime-like girls, neutralising them (and also because Rule of Cute).
The channel provides examples of:
- Adaptational Villainy: Caine is shown to be far more antagonistic than in the source material, where he's shown to be at worst Obliviously Evil and making things worse for the humans because he doesn't fully understand human emotions. Here, once he's aware of Pochi and the rest of the lab in his domain, he becomes hostile to them and actively tries to prevent them from returning back to their world.
- All There in the Manual: The Community Tab of the channel occasionally offers extra information on episodes and other extra details, like how Pochi's transformation drug is called Pixie Tinkle.
- Arc Villain:
- Red in the videos about Rainbow Friends, being responsible for the other monsters and the one fought at the end.
- For The Amazing Digital Circus, once Caine learns that Pochi is in his domain, he becomes very determined to not let her leave and takes on a more directly antagonistic role than in the source material.
- The Poppy Playtime arc spends most of its time focusing on restoring the victims of Catnap, and ends with Pochi and the restored Smiling Critters confronting him.
- Ascended Extra: Red, once transformed into a girl, quickly becomes a morally dubious tritagonist of the series alongside Pochi and her Fembot.
- Attack Backfire: In one video
, Red gets so annoyed by the amount of Chill Guy
memes in her feed, she attacked Chill Guy. Not only did this end up turning Chill Guy into an anthropomorphic girl (which he is unsurprisingly chill about), but it forced Pochi to apologize for Red's behavior
, since it went against her organization's mission statement (Chill Guy was a completely harmless entity).
- Back from the Dead: Hoppy Hopscotch, Bobby Bearhug, Kickin' Chicken, and Bubba Bubbaphant are all brought back from the dead, the former having her body reconstructed by the lab while the latter three are revived From a Single Cell after their remains are found inside CraftyCorn's paint bucket (Bobby) and inside Picky Piggy (Kickin' and Bubba).
- Big Bad: While the channel mostly follows a Monster of the Week format, Red can ultimately be considered this since he's responsible for two of the channel's longest narrative arcs, he's one of the characters who puts up a fight against Pochi the most and the only character to remain evil even after getting turned into an anime girl.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: Pomni, after she's partially abstracted by Caine, starts attacking Pochi's robot assistant with an unchanging neutral expression.
- The Bus Came Back: With the exception of Red, most of the monsters dealt with don't make return appearances for more than a quick gag once their "arc" concludes. However, in the finale of the The Amazing Digital Circus arc, Seek and Screech from Doors arrive to help rescue Pochi.
- Caps Lock: The channel's name is all uppercase letters.
- Crossover: The channel provided the official visualization for Final Hour (Game Ver.) by Pure 100%
for DJMAX Respect Vs V Liberty Pack DLC. In it, Pochi and her robot appear to turn Diein's monstrous servants Typhos, Server, and Judgement into cute backup dancers.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: Pochi's robot assistant is capable of easily besting most creatures the two run into along the way. Though she's occasionally on the opposite end of the curb stomp when she's up against an Arc Villain.
- Disproportionate Retribution: In the first Block Blast tie-in, Pochi gets so irritated from losing at the game that she breaks into its dimension, blasts the workers, uses her drones on the blocks to get the maximum score, and transforms the announcer for commenting on her bad scores. In the second, the announcer decides to get revenge by invading Pochi's dimension with a block golem and try to kill her, but is defeated by Pochi's robot blasting the blocks.
- Fembot: Pochi is always accompanied by an unnamed robot that serves as her assistant and bodyguard. Said robot has a very feminine design, sporting a visible bust, wide hips, and metallic hair.
- Floating Limbs: The arms of Pochi's robot float separately from her torso. Other parts of her are also disconnected from where they would be on her body, such as her knees from her legs, her torso from her waist, and her head from her neck.
- Gender Bender: Pochi's transformation drug turns its targets, including males, into anime girls.
- Hazy-Feel Turn: Following a Gender Bender, Red is able to continue her scientific research at Pochi's lab, but spends an equal amount of time trying to get her revenge and being used by Pochi as bait.
- Heel–Face Turn: Once a creature's aggressiveness has been subdued by their transformation, they often end up assisting Pochi with the capture and reformation of their peers, even if they revert to their previous forms. For example, in the climax of the Rainbow Friends arc, Pochi temporarily transforms the other Friends back into monsters using Red's own drug to help her fight against and subdue Red.
- Interdimensional Travel Device: Pochi's Twin Cat Space-Time Penetrator is capable of creating portals into other worlds, such as The Amazing Digital Circus and the Block Blast mobile phone game.
- Laser-Guided Karma:
- After forcefully transforming several people in order to create the Rainbow Friends, Red ends up being on the receiving end of a Forced Transformation, being turned into a young, rather powerless girl.
- Jax, who had been forcefully transforming other members of the Circus thanks to a piece of Pixie Tinkle covered cake, ends up getting transformed himself.
- Mad Scientist: Despite her good intentions, Pochi is noted to be rather eccentric with her inventions, such as brushing off the Gender Bender aspect of her "Pixie-tinkle forced transformation drug" by saying it's cuter that way and designing her Interdimensional Travel Device to look like a cat's face split vertically down the middle because she thinks it's adorable.
- Massive Multiplayer Crossover: The entities haunted down by Pochi all come from already existing works. Some notable examples are Doors, Amanda the Adventurer, Rainbow Friends and The Amazing Digital Circus.
- Master of the Levitating Blades: One of Pomni's abilities while partially abstracted is making stained knives float and fly towards her opponent.
- Moe Anthropomorphism: The main premise of the channel is that Pochi aims to eliminate aggressive tendencies in dangerous creatures by converting them into cute anime girls.
- Mood Whiplash: While not everybody transformed likes their transformation, after their transformation, the series usually shows the audience their new look by having them look rather happy while striking cutesy poses. Then, the sequence ends, and the newly formed anime style girl is either frustrated or distressed. This is especially noticeable with Caine.
- Morphic Resonance: Anyone transformed by Pixie Tinkle are shown to retain a general appearance based on their appearance immediately prior to the change, even if the monsters transformed had another human form prior to being turned into monsters.
- No Name Given: As of now, Pochi's robotic assistant remains completely unnamed.
- No-Sell: Caine, while still susceptible to the Gender Bender aspect of Pochi's drug, is the only character it's been used against that maintained his aggression and was able to revert to his original form by himself, only delayed long enough for Pochi to escape.
- One-Winged Angel: When confronted at the end of the Rainbow Friends arc, Red injects himself with his own drug to turn into a larger, horned version of himself that easily overpowers Pochi's robot.
- Playful Cat Smile: This is basically Pochi's default expression.
- Shout-Out:
- "Left or Right?" has Wooly from Amanda the Adventurer end up dressed like the Lamb from Cult of the Lamb.
- One of the other dimensions seen when the "Twin cat space-time penetrator" is activated is The Backrooms.
- Spared by the Adaptation: Some characters that are deformed or dead in their source material, such as Kaufmo in The Amazing Digital Circus and the Bigger Bodies Smiling Critters in Poppy Playtime, are saved by Pochi.
- Tampering with Food and Drink: The Amazing Digital Circus arc begins with Red pouring the Gender Bender and aggression-reducing drug onto a cake to give to Pochi, only for the cake to be sucked into Pochi's Interdimensional Travel Device and end up being used by Jax to prank others.
- A Taste of Their Own Medicine:
- Red attempts to do this to Pochi by giving her some cake with Pixie Tinkle on it, but it gets sucked into Pochi's Interdimensional Travel Device before she can eat it.
- Jax, who had been running around transforming members of the Circus with the above mentioned cake, ends up on the receiving end of blast of the drug, forcing him to experience the same transformation he forced onto several others.
- Catnap is forced to experience the effects of his own hallucinogenic gas when Pochi reconstructs it to effect him.
