Rebooting The Madness - TV Tropes

  • ️Sun Mar 16 2025

Rebooting The Madness is a Madness Combat-inspired series by Newgrounds animator Alpha-Nuva.

The first Rebooting The Madness follows Newton Greenshades, who is on a mission to break into the facility of a mysterious organization and rescue a prisoner being held there, a man with guns for hands named "Edgar GunsForHands". Along the way he must fight through a variety of Mooks in colorful sunglasses, some of which grant superpowers, as well as genetically engineered monsters created by a Mad Scientist.

Rebooting The Madness 2 shows the events that transpired before the beginning of the first episode, before jumping to immediately after it ends, now with Edgar as the protagonist.

The first installment can be seen here, while the second can be viewed here.

A third installment was planned, but has yet to be released, although Alpha-Nuva himself is occasionally active.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguously Human: Edgar looks just like all the other characters except he has revolvers for hands. When asked why he has guns instead of hands, Alpha-Nuva has stated that he was born with them.
  • Arm Cannon: Edgar's revolver hands. In the second episode he switches them out with a rifle for a right hand and a mechanical left hand.
  • Back from the Dead: Newton gets revived in episode 2 by Edgar using a machine that extracts DNA. Earlier, the Crab Beast is revived by a pair of scientists through a similar method.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Edgar is the only character to wear a blue suit and glasses, and is one of the good guys.
  • Came Back Strong: As a result of Professor Dordum’s Super Serum, Newton comes back as a hulking Mag Agent-esque monstrosity after being shot in the head.
  • Cliffhanger: The second episode doesn't have a proper conclusion, ending on Edgar being killed by one of the Eye Monsters and Seeker suddenly appearing followed by To Be Continued.
  • Cool Shades: Most of the characters wear tinted glasses, some of which grant them special powers.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Boomer gets shot by Edgar in retaliation for using him as a People Puppet.
  • Dual Wielding:
    • Edgar, sort of, since both his hands are guns.
    • Sunshine dual wields axes while fighting the Edgar in the flashback at the beginning of episode 2.
  • Elite Mooks:
    • The Twins are much stronger than the regular Agents, to the point where just one of them is able to put Newton on the run. They also wear glasses that allow them to control lesser agents.
    • Sunshine, the Agent in light blue glasses who puts up a good fight against the Edgar in Rebooting The Madness 2 and who gets turned into the Freak Plant.
  • From a Single Cell: The Agents have a machine that can revive anything if fed a sample of DNA. Two Agents are able revive the Crab Beast with it, and the Edgar later uses it to revive the Newton.
  • Giant Enemy Crab: The Crab Beast is an Agent mutated into a giant monster with crab-like claws.
  • Go for the Eye: Newton incapacitates the Crab Beast at one point by shooting it in the eye. When it shows up next, it's wearing a metal visor over its face.
  • Harpoon Gun: Newton uses a harpoon gun at one point to kill several Agents through a rooftop window.
  • The Hero Dies: Newton sacrifices himself at the end of the first episode to blow up the facility.
  • Hourglass Plot: The first installment has Newton fighting his way through a facility to save Edgar and dying at the end. The second installment has Edgar venturing into the ruins of that same facility to save Newton (by resurrecting him) and also dying right at the end.
  • In Medias Res: The second episode starts by flashing back to the events that led up to Edgar's capture and imprisonment a week prior to the beginning of the first episode, before jumping to right after the first episode ended.
  • Mad Scientist: Professor Dordum, whose hobby is experimenting on people to turn them into horrifying monsters.
  • Made of Iron:
    • Newton gets shot several times and even has an axe thrown into his back, but still keeps getting up.
    • Dordum as well. He gets shot tons of times, and even hit at point blank range by Edgar's Wave-Motion Gun, but never stops showing up to menace the protagonists.
  • Mauve Shirt:
    • Boomer, who starts off looking like any other Agent until he switches sides and joins Newton.
    • One notable Agent gets slammed into a wall by Newton, but gets up despite bleeding from his head and later is the one to kill Newton by shooting him in the head. After coming back as a monster, Newton repays him by making sure he doesn't escape the blast of his bomb.
  • Mook–Face Turn: Boomer starts off as an Agent guarding the control room for the prison block before switching sides to join Newton.
  • Mook Maker: Professor Dordum at one point summons a group of orange Agents by watering the ground with a watering can.
  • Nebulous Evil Organisation: The enigmatic organization the Agents all work for, and who Newton and Edgar are fighting. It’s not shown what their goal is, but it seems to involve performing horrible experiments on people.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain!: The Freak Plant saves Newton from one of the Twins by attacking it from behind, although only so he can fight Newton himself.
  • No Name Given: Newton Greenshades and Edgar GunsForHands are never named in the episodes. A character sheet gives their names as only “The Protagonist” and “the Prisoner” respectively, with their actual names only coming from a news post by Alpha-Nuva.
  • Not Quite Dead: No matter how many times it looks like the heroes have killed the Freak Plant, it always gets back up and shows up later to attack them again. The second episode even shows it's able to survive without a head.
  • Orphaned Series: The series has been left unfinished for some time. While Alpha-Nuva himself is still occasionally active, he has mostly moved away from the Madness fandom.
  • People Puppets: The tangerine glasses worn by the Twins grant them the power to control any Agents of a lower rank. They also work on Edgar, as shown when Boomer puts on a pair.
  • Playing with Syringes: A literal example, as Professor Dordum creates monsters like the Crab Beast by injecting people with syringes full of a liquid that mutates them.
  • Shared Universe: Has one with Alpha-Nuva's Paradigmadness collaboration, as shown by the Eye Monsters and Seeker making an appearance at the end of Rebooting The Madness 2.
  • Suicide Mission: Newton's mission turns out to be one, as he had an explosive planted inside of him which he has Edgar activate after rescuing him from the facility in order to blow it up.
  • Was Once a Man: Both the Crab Beast and the Freak Plant were originally regular Agents until they were injected with a Super Serum by Professor Dordum. Newton also gets turned into a monster at the end, though he is at least able to hold onto his humanity.
