Intergraph Corporation is an American software development and services company. It provides enterprise engineering and geospatially powered software to businesses, governments, and organizations around the world. Intergraph operates through two divisions: Process, Power & Marine (PP&M) and Security, Government & Infrastructure (SG&I). The company’s headquarters is in Huntsville, Alabama, USA. In 2008, Intergraph was one of the hundred largest software companies in the world.^[1] In 2010, Intergraph was acquired by Hexagon AB.

History

Intergraph was founded in 1969 as M&S Computing, Inc., by former IBM engineers who had been working with NASA and the U.S. Army in developing systems that would apply digital computing to real-time missile guidance.

From this initial work, M&S Computing was among the pioneers in the development of interactive computer graphics systems, which allowed engineers to display and interact with drawings and associated alphanumeric information. The company changed its name to Intergraph Corporation in 1980 to reflect this activity.

In 2000, Intergraph exited the hardware business and became purely a software company. On July 21, 2000, it sold its Intense3D graphics accelerator division to 3DLabs, and its workstation and server division to Silicon Graphics.^[2]

From 2000 to 2006, Intergraph underwent a major transformation in its market strategy. In 2004, the company executed its three-phased business transformation plan called “Now,” “Next,” and “After-Next.” In the “Now” phase, Intergraph rebranded itself and more than doubled its operating income. The “Next” phase brought additional focus to Intergraph’s business, allowing the company to redeploy assets and resources to further invest in its differentiated capabilities and focus on the areas of business and technology that provided the greatest value. Intergraph consolidated its operations to be more closely aligned to its strategic plan. The company experienced its strongest annual revenue growth in more than ten years.

On November 29, 2006, Intergraph was acquired by an investor group led by Hellman & Friedman LLC, and Texas Pacific Group and JMI Equity, making the company privately held. Now in the “After Next” phase, Intergraph is focused on growth. The company offers comprehensive enterprise engineering and geospatially powered software solutions for vertical industries, including public safety, security, defense and intelligence, utilities, communications, photogrammetry, government, transportation, process, power, and marine.

Most recently, on October 28, 2010, Intergraph was acquired by Hexagon AB.^[3] The transaction marks the return of Intergraph as part of a publicly traded company.

Solutions

Process, Power & Marine (PP&M)

Intergraph PP&M develops enterprise engineering software for the design, construction, and operation of plants, ships, and offshore facilities. Its solutions serve engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firms and owner operators.

Process

Intergraph’s plant design and engineering software is used by chemical, pharmaceutical, metals and mining, oil and gas, consumer goods, and other process plants. The company’s plant drawing software and design solutions provide 3D layout capabilities with support for collaboration throughout the enterprise.

Power

Intergraph's fossil and nuclear power plant layout software are used worldwide, including nuclear technology such as the pebble bed modular reactor design that will offer increased efficiency and operations safety. These solutions support nuclear plant construction and maintenance and provide engineers with the ability to create 3D plant models and interactive visualizations to meet nuclear plant requirements. The software is also able to maintain a comprehensive engineering database to track and manage components essential for projects such as nuclear plants that have long operational life cycles, and create new plant efficiency models before plant construction begins.

Marine and Offshore

Intergraph 3D and marine engineering design solutions for ship design, production, and overall life-cycle management are used for shipbuilding, as well as offshore applications. Intergraph’s SmartMarine 3D naval architecture and marine engineering software supports a multi-disciplined design environment and global concurrent engineering for any size shipbuilding project.

Safe Operations and Maintenance

SmartPlant Enterprise plant management software streamlines structural plant automation and planning, optimizes material flow, and supports workflow management. To address plant security issues, Intergraph’s plant safety and maintenance solutions use a plant’s current organizational HAZOP knowledge and apply it across the enterprise to aid in daily plant operations and protection.

Security, Government & Infrastructure (SG&I)

Intergraph SG&I develops geospatially powered software solutions for the defense and intelligence, public safety, security, government, transportation, photogrammetry, utilities, and communications industries.

Defense

Intergraph offers command and control systems and mission planning software to help military, governments, and organizations maintain situational awareness, coordinate security planning measures, and execute predetermined response plans through a central common operating picture. The company’s critical infrastructure protection and national security software suite provides comprehensive information needed by first responders to make informed decisions. Intergraph also offers solutions to help fortify force protection systems and remote sensing applications that protect property, intelligence, and people.

The company’s geospatial intelligence solutions, based on the GeoMedia family of products, include tools to collect, measure, and quickly analyze tremendous amounts of interrelated actionable intelligence. The integrated surveillance fusion between Intergraph’s incident management systems and third-party cameras, alarms, and sensors provides spatial decision support to command and control operators by supplying them with video information about each event or alarm.

Government

Intergraph’s border security systems for military and government organizations use third-party video, sensor technology, and wide area surveillance equipment to enable users to locate and coordinate valuable assets and see potential threats. The company’s perimeter security systems bring together components that pinpoint current gaps in protection and add perimeter security in direct response to those gaps.

Intergraph also offers local, regional, and national government agencies comprehensive geospatial information systems for managing complex spatial data infrastructures. This geospatial technology is compliant with OpenGIS specifications as defined by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). The company’s map and 3D terrain visualization systems are based on GeoMedia software and support the manipulation and maintenance of geospatial data related to property, parcel, easement, or cadastre. Intergraph’s terrain analysis software delivers extensive topographical and strategic information, providing preparatory support for mission planning systems and other applications.

Photogrammetry

From acquisition to exploitation to digital distribution, Intergraph’s aerial mapping and photogrammetry solutions provide complete systems for the production and management of maps, digital terrain models (DTMs), and other geographic data. Its Digital Mapping Camera (DMC) supports photogrammetric data acquisition for a broad range of mapping, GIS, and remote sensing applications. Intergraph also provides integrated flight management systems that combine the capabilities of a traditional flight management system with sensor control modules (SCMs), allowing users to access and control a variety of sensors and peripherals. The company’s flight planning software for aviation planning and aerial survey procedures can access a wide variety of data, including vector mapping data and digital orthophotos, as well as any georeferenced raster backdrop.

Public Safety and Security

Intergraph’s emergency response management software provides public safety and government agencies with the technology and tools to achieve a common operational picture, which provides consistent and standardized information and geospatial intelligence to all relevant parties. This common operational picture also supports agencies in disaster planning, incident management, and police records management.

The core of Intergraph's public safety technology is its Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) core system for controlling command and control or resources during incidents. These include police, fire, EMS and search and rescue. Integraph's CAD is used by the major cities in the world. 1 in 11 citizens in the world are protected by Intergraph CAD software. Another focus is mobile technology for emergency personnel in the field which include iMobile and field reporting. You usually see these running on laptops in fire trucks and police cars.

Intergraph’s emergency dispatch software provides an integrated emergency management system that addresses everything from call handling and dispatching to remote access and mobile data. In addition, Intergraph forensic video analysis and enhancement solutions provide law enforcement, military, and security agencies with tools for data capture, analysis, enhancement, and editing of raw surveillance video footage.

Transportation

Intergraph assists airports and transportation agencies in building intelligent transportation systems networks through its transportation GIS solutions, which include airport management systems, highway asset management systems, rail management systems, and more. Intergraph also provides integrated transportation security solutions for incident management, command and control, and infrastructure management.

Utilities & Communications

Intergraph offers a variety of software systems to help utility companies enhance their infrastructure through development of a more intelligent power grid, or smart grid. These utility GIS solutions include outage management tools that provide a single point of reference for equipment monitoring and mobile resource management.
