- January 10: Greece devalues the drachma by 15.5%
- January 17: A major earthquake (7.0 on the Richter scale) strikes off the coast ofKefalonia.
- January 29: Greece reforms family law giving women equal rights.
February
- February 5: The figures of the 1981 Census are announced: the population of Greece stands at 9,740,411.
- February 24: The SS "Golden Dawn" sinks off the coast of Euboea. 26 passengers drown.
March
- March 19: "Vradyni" publisher, Tzortzis Athanasiadis is murdered in his office by left-wing radicals.
- March 22: In a letter to the Police, an organisation called "Anti-terrorist Struggle" assumes responsibility for the murder of publisher Tzortzis Athanasiadis.
- March 30: The 5-day, 40-hour work week is enacted for private industry in Greece.

- June 4: Panagiotis Panagos breaks the Greek record in the high jump with 2.26m.
- June 29: OAKA Stadium suffers severe damages by rioting hooligans during the Greek Cup final AEK- PAOK (2-0). Sports general secretary Kimon Koulouris states that no football game will ever be held again in OAKA Stadium.

- September 22: Indian PM Indira Gandhi pays a three-day visit to Greece.
- September 28: Olympiakos defeat Ajax Amsterdam 2-0 at OAKA Stadium and advance in the Cup of Champions (first match 0-0 draw). Nikos Anastopoulos scores both goals in extra time.

- October 6: Composer Mikis Theodorakis receives the Lenin Award.
- October 26: For the first time in Greece, a woman gives birth through in-vitro fertilisation.
November
- November 15: The "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" is proclaimed in the occupied territories of the island. Only Turkey will recognise this state.
- November 15: US Navy Captain, George Tsantes, who is the head of JUSMAGG, is killed with his driver Nikos Veloutsos, an employee of the US Embassy, on Kifissia Avenue in Psychiko. The Revolutionary Organisation 17 November assume responsibility.
