Ian Alexandrovich Nepomniachtchi, born on July 14, 1990, is a Russian chess grandmaster. He has clinched numerous titles throughout his career, including victories in the Russian Superfinals of 2010 and 2020, as well as the European Individual titles in 2010. Nepomniachtchi's triumphs extend to prestigious events like the Tal Memorial in 2016 and the Aeroflot Open in 2008 and 2015.
As a key member of the Russian team, Nepomniachtchi has contributed to notable victories in team championships, such as the World Team Chess Championship in Antalya (2013) and Astana (2019), and the European Team Chess Championship in Reykjavik in 2015.
Nepomniachtchi's journey to the top includes significant qualifications, such as securing a spot in the Candidates Tournament 2020/2021 by finishing second in the FIDE Grand Prix 2019. He went on to win the 2021 FIDE Candidates tournament, earning the opportunity to challenge Magnus Carlsen for the World Chess Championship title.
