Meeting was in person at the Arlington Baptist Church and online through Google Meets.

• Rosalind Reischer delivered a PowerPoint presentation in support of the Missing Middle on behalf YIMBYs (yes in my backyard) of NOVA

• Kristina Dorville spoke about a recent Arlington County CIVFED (Civic Federation) resolution around transparency regarding the Arlington County Board, “Resolution to Restore the Public’s Confidence in Arlington County Government”

• Diane Dunston and Kristina Dorville spoke about their work as a part of 16 civic association groups that are working together on the Missing Middle Initiative

• Arlington County Board is voting on the Missing Middle initiative at their March 18 Board meeting.  If you haven’t already filled out the County’s current survey, it’s here: latest Arlington County government questionnaire on MM housing

The Arlington Planning Commission is planning to hold a public hearing  at 7 PM on March 6 regarding the Arlington County government’s current Missing Middle plan.

• Katie Cristol and Christian Dorsey aren’t running again for County Board.  Several candidates have already announced they’re running.

• Bank of America–apparently everything was done as planned, but the construction will be a disruption to the neighborhood. We’ll pass along more information as we get it.

• Sunrise is forming a subgroup for its site plan review. We can have two reps, please let the board know if you’re interested.

• The community would like AHCA to update our website.

• The community would like an update on Alcova Heights Park renovation.  Alex reached out the County.

• Shannon also serves on the Board of the Columbia Pike Partnership and spoke briefly about the latest meeting where the Arlington County Police spoke about two recent isolated gun incidents on the Pike (both reported in ArlNow)

• We are looking for a treasurer! We currently have $1,500 in our bank account, $3,000 in our PayPal account, and $400 in petty cash.

Thursday, March 28^th is our first Community Meeting of 2019. The meeting will be at 730pm at the Baptist Church.

APS (Arlington Public Schools) is putting a plan in place to develop new elementary school boundaries.  As a first step, they are reviewing school walk zones and looking at potentially expanding those zones.  While we currently don’t have any walk zones in Alcova Heights at the elementary school level that could change.

I got a request yesterday from APS for 2 Alcova Heights representatives to participate in the walk zone review process.  Unfortunately, we need to identify the volunteers quickly as the first meetings are next week.  The lack of notice is because they didn’t include us originally, because we currently don’t have any elementary school walk zones.  Fortunately they changed their minds.

I’m putting this out on the listserve for 2 reasons.  First, I want you to be aware of what is going on. Second, we need two volunteers to participate and represent the neighborhood in the walk zone review process.  If you have elementary school age children or will be at some point soon, this might be just the thing for you!  That said, others are more than welcome to volunteer.

From what I understand, this will be a relatively short effort.  There are 2 meetings next week – one on Feb 28 that involves Barcroft and Randolph, and another on March 1 regarding the new Fleet Elementary (under construction next to TJ Middle School) and Patrick Henry (soon to be the Montessori school).  The idea is for the reps to then come back to the community and get feedback before the follow on meetings later in March.  Please see the attachment for more details.  If for some reason you can’t access the attachment, it should be available on the Alcova website later this evening.

AH Streetlights demonstration, Spring 2018 – letter from the County

Upcoming Streetlight Testing and Demonstration in Your Neighborhood

Dear Residents, Your neighborhood has been selected for a streetlight demonstration as part of the County’s Streetlight Management Plan (SMP). The SMP focuses on researching new streetlight technology, investigating ways to enhance the appearance of our streetscapes, updating lighting standards and improving outage reporting. The SMP will also guide County staff on the selection of future streetlight technology, optimization of maintenance, and general service delivery needs. The following streets have been selected: • S Irving St between 7th St S and 9th St S • S Ivy St between 7th St S and 9th St S • 9th St S between S Ivy St and S Quincy St • 6th St S between S Glebe Rd and S Quincy St • 7th St S between S Glebe Rd and S Quincy St • 8th St S between S Glebe Rd and S Quincy St • Columbia Pike between S Oakland St and S Veitch St • George Mason Dr between Lee Hwy and Washington Blvd Attached is a map of the locations (see pdf letter above). Beginning in mid-January, the new LED streetlights will be temporarily installed for approximately two to three months. Residents should expect inconveniences such as: dust, noise, debris, and other temporary construction-related activities. You may also see additional utility marking and excavation as some of the locations may require additional pole installation. We will make every effort to minimize the inconvenience and greatly appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. After the test period, these streetlights and temporary poles will be removed and the original lights will be reinstalled. During this time, a streetlight demonstration for the Streetlight Community Advisory Panel will be hosted by the County to share more about the streetlight technology and different products. This demonstration will be open to the public and we invite you and your community to share any feedback. Our team will provide more information about the demonstration once a date and time is finalized.
