5.0 out of 5 stars Aretha at her finest!
Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2008
This album brings back very fond memories of my late cousin! My sister and I would play this from sun up to sun down in my grandmother's home in Charleston SC. Aretha never looked more elegant as she does on this cover, and the music is right in sinc! "Til you come back to me" and "With Pen in Hand" shows how Aretha's voice can soar above beautiful strings and orcestration. This is a long awaited reissue and a must for all of her fans. It is also, sadly, represents an era that is now gone when music, lyrics and elegant presentation was important aspects of artistry. Let Aretha In Your Life with this fabulous recording!!
5.0 out of 5 stars Soft and mellow Aretha

I had this album in vinyl 45 years ago, a gift from a college boyfriend, and wore the grooves out. A very soft and mellow Aretha, mournful ballads rather than her lively stuff. Was excited to listen to it again after 3 decades, and it hadn’t lost any of its heart. A real keeper for me, the second time around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smoother production than earlier Atlantic releases

Aretha Franklin's 20th studio album dates from 1974 and contains hit singles 'Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing' and 'Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)'. Anyone familiar with those two major records will get a pretty fair idea of the sound of the album, with some of the raw, emotive edges knocked off as the production headed in a smoother and more polished direction. A number 1 in the U.S. R&B chart, this is, as is much of Aretha's Atlantic output, a great album with well chosen covers by the likes of Bill Withers Ashford & Simpson, Leon Russell and Bobby Womack, which dominate the album. Just two of the 11 tracks are self-penned, but with Aretha that hardly matters as she makes the tracks her own. Ballads feature more prominently than on earlier Atlantic releases where the raw power of Aretha was to the fore, but here that voice is placed front and centre in the mix showing that delicacy is well within her ability, indicating an understanding of changing music tastes. Strings are very noticeable in the arrangements here in an album that just qualifies as being in The Queen of Soul's classic period, though seemingly striving to satisfy a wider audience with some of those rough edges knocked off.

Really love Aretha..who doesn't but must admit I have a soft spot for her disco era like Jump To It so had to give this cd a few listens before it sunk in but yes it's a great album overall with amazing vocal performances.
