Dickins book on fairy chess, out of print for much too long time, is a classic book. It describes hundreds of fairy chess pieces and fairy chess rules, that are used in problems, often with exciting examples of problems and with historical comments.

The book contains many chess variants. This book has an emphasis on fairy chess problems, i.e., problems in chess variants. The first print was in 1967, by Q Press, Richmond, Surrey. Later, the book was printed by Dover (1971). The book may be hard to find. There is also a German translation:
