Your Voice! Your Passion! Your Future!
THE STUDENT DEMOCRACY MOVEMENT
Democracy Matters (DM) empowers students with a voice in politics, the skills for life-long civic engagement, and the passion to create a just, fair, and inclusive democracy. Our non-partisan college and high school chapters inspire and mobilize students to protect and strengthen democracy. DM students fight to expand voting rights, defeat the power of big money in politics, and uplift social justice activism.
DM Paid College Interns
Democracy Matters accepts applications for paid internships on college campuses. Our interns build and lead DM chapters on their own campuses. With support and training from DM staff, interns mobilize students to protect and expand American democracy.
DM High School Leaders
The Democracy Matters High School Leaders Program is an internship for high school students. Interns raise awareness at their school about voting, democracy, and social justice issues. Supported by DM staff and DM materials, interns develop leadership and organizing skills including outreach, public speaking, and writing.
Our Issues
Democracy Matters tackles political issues fundamental to a democracy including big money in politics, voting rights and voter suppression, gerrymandering, and election integrity. We emphasize the intersection of these with other critical issues – racial justice, environmental protection, gun safety, economic equality, prison reform, educational opportunity, LGBTQ and reproductive rights, and much more. Without a fair and inclusive democracy, comprehensive reform is blocked by powerful elites.
DM Students Speak Out
Franscwai Davis, UNC/Charlotte
I have honestly learned more about our political system and how to make change than I have in my entire academic career.
Coley Phillips, Western Carolina University
Democracy Matters has brought college students together on my campus, gotten them interested in politics, and politically mobilized. It’s the best!
April Conant, SUNY/Oneonta
It’s great to break away from the apathetic college student stereotype that plagues my campus and be an active citizen.
Tom Byrne, Vanderbilt University
Democracy Matters has really developed my leadership skills. Thanks for all the great help!
National Student Summits
DM Summits bring students from across the country to brainstorm together. With interactive workshops, expert speakers, strategy sessions, and networking, they share ideas, explore best practices, and plan great DM action campaigns.
What We Do
DM students educate, involve and mobilize their campuses for social change with creative action campaigns. They organize events, discussions, rallies, speak outs, class raps and petition campaigns. They build coalitions, register voters, lobby politicians, work with local communities on social justice issues, and much much more….
