This thriller is set in early 20th-century London where a series
of nasty murders have recently occurred. An aunt then tells an innocent young
girl that the blood of the werewolf flows through her veins and that she is
responsible for the deaths. The distraught lass immediately breaks off her
engagement. Fortunately, her lover is sufficiently devoted to her to begin
investigating the strange case on his own. He soon finds the real culprit and is
reunited with his lady love.

The citizens in turn-of-the-century London are terrified and
Scotland Yard is baffled by a mysterious string of bloody killings in the city's
most infamous park. In a nearby estate Phyllis Allenby (June Lockhart) fears
that the "Allenby Curse" that led to the death of her parents has now turned her
into a "she-wolf." Haunted by dreams of mayhem and worried she's going insane,
Phyllis breaks off her engagement with her fiancée (Don Porter). Determined to
prove that the woman he loves couldn't be a murderess, he sets out to unmask the
real killer.

She-Wolf of London was previously available HERE shared on a 2001 Universal DVD disc with Werewolf of London. She-Wolf gets a bad rap as it is more a psychological thriller than a typical Universal 'creature' horror. It has the fog-drenched atmosphere but lacks the monster attacks, or in the case of werewolf flics - the transformation. This doesn't make it a bad film - just a different one. The dual-layered SD transfer with solid bitrate looks excellent - adept contrast and consistent grain are hallmarks of this video quality. Exceptionally clean and impressive indeed for the lower format. Lossy Dolby audio in both original English or a French DUB. There are optional French subtitles (and they are removable) and the score by William Lava (Flaxy Martin, Retreat, Hell!, The Night Riders) sounds supportive, dramatic and atmospheric. It is in the sped-up PAL standard and is region free. Extras include some discussion in French by Jean-Pierre Dionnet about both Loup-garou (werewolf) and another on this particular film but neither are English-friendly (no subs). There is a photos gallery and many trailers of films from this collection. This title hasn't made it to Blu-ray from Elephant films, but it has plenty of appeal if standing out as an unusual entry - short-ish at less than an hour. With the extras in French - it probably makes more sense to splurge on the reasonably-priced 2001 Universal DVD - HERE - losing the PAL speedup and getting Werewolf of London included. - Gary Tooze |
