French actor Michel Galabru dies aged 93

Michel Galabru died in his sleep on Monday, 4 January. The 93 year-old had appeared in more than 250 films.

Born on 27 October 1922 in Safi, Morocco, Galabru was one of the most popular French actors and comedians.

Galabru was best known to be the "adjutant" in the series Le Gendarme with Louis de Funès, another famous French comedian, and for his part in the 2008 hit comedy Bienvenue chez les ch'tis.

Playing in both comedies and dramas, Galabru was awarded a César in 1977 for best actor in Bertrand Tavernier's film The Judge and the Assassin.

He also made his presence felt on stage by appearing in more than 80 plays.
