Listen Thing is piece of 4 parts; the titles of each are anagrams of the name Listen Thing:

Tingle Hints - inversion
Shingle Tint - retrograde
Lent in Sight - inversion of retrograde
Silent Night - prime form

When the piece is performed on a music box, a single custom-punched paper tape is used which is inserted in 4 different orientations.

Furthermore, a version for toy piano, celesta, harpsichord or organ exists which is basically a transcription of the original music box piece.

Helene Breisach: Und wir haben zum Abschluss noch eine spezielle Version von "Stille Nacht", die wir gleich hören werden. Eine, die ein bisschen verklausuliert ist, würde ich sagen. Das hört man am Anfang gar nicht so direkt, aber wenn man es weiß, warum, dann hört man es vielleicht doch.

Martin Mallaun: Ja, es ist ein ganz schönes Fundstück. Ein befreundeter Komponist, Karlheinz Essl, der liebt Palindrome und Umkehrungen. Der hat "Stille Nacht" auf Lochstreifen für eine Spieluhr gestanzt. Das Papierband kann man dann in die Spieluhr einspannen, und beim Drehen spielt sie "Stille Nacht" ab.

Und dann hat er den Streifen verkehrt eingelegt, oben nach unten, links nach rechts, oben nach unten, links rechts. Und so auf diese Weise kann man das Stück viermal abspielen in verschiedenen Versionen. Das ist so was Palindromatisches, finde ich. Und daher auch den Titel "Listen Thing" - eine Veränderung der Buchstaben von "Silent Night". Ich finde das total poetisch!

Das ist so, wie wenn man einen liebgewonnenen Gegenstand - in dem Fall "Stille Nacht" - dreht und ihn von allen Seiten betrachtet. Manchmal blitzt dieser Rhythmus auf, und manchmal weniger. Jetzt hören wir diese Version von Stille Nacht viermal hintereinander, eben in vier verschiedenen Versionen. Und erst am Schluss richtig herum!
